Five Bad Days on the PCT and How I Got Through Them

There are plenty of blogs, vlogs, Instagram feeds, and hiker war stories out there which highlight how awesome doing a long-distance hike can be. Everyone has amazing stories and pictures of mountain tops, wild animals, crazy townspeople, funky bars and beautiful sunsets. Everyone says they had a great time, would do it again and regretted nothing. I’d like to share five bad days I had last year. Maybe some of these will happen to you, and maybe these stories will help. ...

Saving My Thru-Hike Before it Starts

Coming To Terms With My Expectations
Walking up Sassafras Mountain in the early stages of the AT is a beautiful albeit difficult experience. Even more so when the nagging hitch in your leg turns into full blown tendinitis. That was two months ago. Now I’m 5 days away from starting my thru hike and I am still dealing with the repercussions.  My right leg is noticeably weaker than my left leg from avoiding activity that requires my right leg. ...

Planning a Thru-Hike As a Member of the PCT’s 1.6%

Who am I, Anyway?
Not to brag, but I’m a member of the 1%.
Well, probably not the 1% of which you are thinking; I will be a m ember of the 1% of thru-hikers younger than 20. To be completely honest with you, that statistic is actually closer to 1.6%. But even that could be way off—it’s just a number that Mac of Halfway Anywhere extrapolated from a survey 502 PCT hikers.

Gear that made it

Everyone starts the same way: unknowing, feeling their way through the dark. And, everyone’s start and end photos are remarkably similar to other hikers’. In the beginning there are sleeping bags, tents and sleeping pads strapped to the outsides of packs. Hikers are eager, with slightly fuller cheeks. At the end everything looks more efficient, and the people more confident. Sometimes hikers are unrecognizable. Everything, from the baby fat on their cheeks to the pack itself, ...

Goals vs. Expectations: Let’s Talk About It

Often, we set all types of expectations for our life. We make them for ourselves, relationships, and what we think our future should look like. Based on a personal study (which has no research) expectations we set turn out the way we want 1/10 times. In my opinion, we set our expectations too high. This causes us to feel let down and frustrated.

Are you a Real Hiker?  Some version of these questions has been raised before, during, or after every longer hike we’ve done.   Sometimes it takes the form of jokes told strolling down the trail, or as a friendly, philosophical discussion around a campfire or the dinner table in an albergue.   Other times it morphs into a heated debate.   If you’ve found the courage to attempt anything life-changing or different, chances are you’ve encountered at least one detractor along the way.  ...

What I’ll Be Eating on the Trail

When I attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail this year, I’ve estimated that I will be burning between 4,600 and 6,300 calories per day while hiking. With this in mind, the 3 to 5 days of food that I’ll be carrying for each section of the trail I hike, will need to be lightweight, nutritious, and calorie dense. Most thru-hikers resupply at towns along the way, but many towns have no more than a gas station convenience store or something like a dollar store where the selection of food is limited and, ...

What Hiking for Cause Changes in your Preparations

Some free spirits embark on thru-hikes with very little preparation and somehow miraculously make it to the end in perfect health and happiness. For the rest of us, the months before departing on a longer hike can disappear in a blur of activities and preparations. These can include:
1. Choosing a trail and deciding when and where to start
2. Pouring over maps and trying to guesstimate a working itinerary
3. Deciding whether to create re-supply boxes or not
4. ...

Changes in Technology on the Trail for Old Farts

There’s no doubt that technological advances have changed life on the trail. Many people equate technology with electronics, but there’s much more to it than cell phones, music, and podcasts. Trail life is hardly even recognizable to those who thru-hiked trails as recently as the 80s. But looking at the average age of the current class of thru-hikers, that’s a lifetime ago. The little whipper snappers of today have no memory of the days when we thru-hiked, ...

Fear and Stoke

A few nights ago I awoke at 2:00 AM in a panic. Thoughts started racing through my head. Mice in shelters. Bears. Oh god, I haven’t practiced hanging my bear bag yet. I’m going to get hypothermia. Should I get a pair of down booties? Or a liner? I’m definitely going to forget to sleep with my water filter if it’s freezing. Hmm. Giardia. I should practice pitching my tent in the pouring rain. I should bring extra leggings. ...

Chance of Bad Weather: Going Heavy Gear List

The 2019 PCT year could be a rough weather year
After talking with a number of trekkers that have quite a bit more long distance trekking experience than I do, many people go with ultralight gear with base weights of 7-10 pounds. Since I assume that embarking on the PCT in early March is already a little more risky than starting this journey in late April or early May, it will likely be a more difficult journey on the PCT. ...

How a 9-5 Job Led Me to a Thru-Hike of the PCT

The Questions
As I’m preparing for my thru-hike of the PCT this summer I’m getting all the usual questions. Are you going alone? How long does that take? What about your job? Aren’t you scared? But what about going to the bathroom? What do you eat?

These questions are easy because they’re practical. I’ve either extensively researched or inherently know most of the answers. The harder question (always from people who are deeply invested) inevitably follows—Why? ...

Rain, hearts, trail names and adventures to come on the AT

On rainy days in Tennessee, I like to sit in my room listening to the pitter patter of rain trickling down the roofing as I gorge my belly with excessive mugs of hot tea and mixed fruit. I’ll be trading in a cushy job and an extremely comfortable lifestyle for trudging up mountains and sleeping on the ground as I journey Northbound on the Appalachian Trail to Mount Katahdin. ...

Do Your Shoes Fit? Common Shoe Fit Problems and Solutions

Footwear Woes

I think we’ve all been there at some point in our lives. The constant struggle of juggling expectation, obligation, and reality. It has become the new norm for college-aged kids like myself; go to school, get the degree, and get the job. It’s simple enough but not satisfying enough for me. This brings me to an excerpt from famed transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, ...

The bipartisan vote was 92 to 8.
The bill goes to the House, where it also has bipartisan support.
The conservation fund, which has supported recreation and conservation projects in all 50 states since the 1960s, expired in September when Congress failed to extend it. ...

Heya, I’m Ashley!

A little introduction is in order.
So about me: I’m 27 years old, mother to an eight year old Tabby cat, and was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida.
I’ve been a Registered Nurse for over five years, ...

How to Hike the Trail With No Experience

Hitting a long distance hiking trail this season? Never backpacked a day in your life? Sounds a lot like me.
When I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016, the longest hike I’d ever done was a whopping 6 miles. I’d never camped in the backcountry. I’d never used my camp stove. I’d definitely never pooped in the woods! Needless to say, I started out with everything to learn and nothing to lose.
The fact that I was completely inexperienced beforehand didn’t stop me, ...

Alternative Thru-Hike Training Plan – No Walking Required

Conventional wisdom says that to prepare for a thru-hike, I should be walking around with my loaded pack. A LOT.  But I live in downtown Seattle, so I already walk everywhere.  I walk to the grocery store. I walk to work sometimes. I walk to the bus. I walk to go shopping. I walk to visit friends, and I walk if I want to do, well, anything.  To be fair, I do go on shakedown hikes with friends, ...

Katahdin and Beyond: The Best Hikes in Maine’s Baxter State Park

With more that 200,000 acres of wilderness and over 200 miles of trails, Baxter State Park (BSP) offers some of the best hiking in the eastern US. Katahdin draws most of the attention in the park since it serves as the Northern Terminus of the AT as well as Maine’s highest summit. While Katahdin is certainly worth exploring, miles of trails and over 40 peaks reward hikers with some of the northeast’s finest scenery.
1)  Katahdin- Hamlin Loop

Thrills, Chills, Spills and Rats

Thrills
In preparation for my upcoming AT Thru-Hike, I have been going out and hiking different parts of the AT ahead of time. It helps me to test gear at different times to see how it responds to different weather conditions and how compatible it is with the actual terrain I will be on soon. This week my friend Candis and I went to a section of the AT known as ‘Preachers Rock’. It was only a little over a mile hike to get to and the view was absolutely stunning. ...

Julie V’s AT Vlog #2: Pre Appalachian Trail Thru Hike Q&A

In my latest video, I cover some of the most commonly asked questions about my thru-hike. The questions come from my friends and family, including five questions from my very own mother (#momsofthruhikers) as well as your comments on my 2019 AT gear list video.
I cover a handful of need-to-know AT basics, including:

Food: I discuss how often I plan to resupply in town and which lightweight, high-calorie foods are on my shopping list.
Technology: I show you the portable charger I’m taking with me and discuss the additional outlet plugs I’ll need to keep all batteries charged for vlogging. ...

Hiking for a cause, and what that means

We plan to spend the next three years hiking across Canada on the world’s longest trail, The Great Trail.  We’re doing it to promote bird conservation. Yes, we’re hiking for a cause, but that might not mean what you think it does.  We aren’t trying to tell anyone what to do.  Actually, we’re mostly hoping to listen to other people’s stories.  We want to find out why you all like to hike, how you relate to nature, ...

haaaaave you met Swami Bittergoat?

This was me on my very first thru hike, Appalachian Trail 2013.
Swami is sporting a stylish camouflage  Gore-Tex hat, full rain  gear and  a gargantuan, pale yellow monstrosity.  This is no candid shot; I was actually posing. If you could see my face, it is quite giddy. It says: ‘ holy astrofuckballs, I’m doing this, I’m really, really doing this.’
But did you see that pack, though? Me neither. That’s because it is in the process of being ingested by my 70 L pack cover. ...

Why did I not know this sooner? Hiker Hindsight

"Why did no one tell me about this?!?" The number of times I asked this question during my thru-hike was more then I thought it would have been. Know that might have been because I did ignore some of the advice that I read and got before but other things were not something I knew beforehand. As the hiking season is starting up I have been thinking about all the things I learned along my hike.

Why I Am Hiking the Appalachian Trail

A Pilgrimage?
It’s Camino season over at REI. For some reason this time of year we get many customers planning their trip to do the Camino de Santiago in Spain. If you’ve never heard of the Camino think of it as backpacking, but with way more access to wine and finer foods. Honestly, the Camino is what sparked my journey into backpacking. I was inspired at the thought of people so devout that they would go roughly 500 miles just to seek God or whatever else they worship. ...

Trail Confession: I paid for a hit on my best friend

That’s not all. It wasn’t the first time, and I’d do it again under similar circumstances. I only wish I had a friend that would do the same for me.
I’ve used the same hit man more than once. I had him come to the house when there would be witnesses. I even stayed, watched, and participated in the death of my best friend. I held her when he injected her with a muscle relaxer to keep her calm throughout the whole process.  ...

A Happy Introduction

My name is Alexandria, trail name Pocahontas, and I’ll be blogging for the Trek for the 2019 hiking season!
I did my first long distance hike on the Appalachian Trail in 2016, having never backpacked before in my life. I’m now madly in love with thru-hiking and long distance backpacking and can’t-stop-won’t-stop adventuring at every turn.

After the trail, I moved to the great adventure state of Utah.
I am totally in love with the place. ...
