While we technically had begun hiking in the Sierra Nevada range just after Tehachapi at mile 566, it didn’t feel official until we left Kennedy Meadows at mile 702.

To Guthook or Not to Guthook

I’ve always used Daniel Chazin’s Data Book. My friend chose this guidebook when we started the A.T. in 2012. When I returned to finish my hike this year, I didn’t think twice and ordered the 2018 Data Book.

Walking the trail one comes across numerous trees that have fallen on the trail. Most have been cut or notched in such a way that a hiker can just step over them.
