Hanover and free food (6/26, 6/27, 6/28)

Day 121, 6/26: The Lookout -Thistle Hill shelter (14.8 miles)
We woke up to see the sunrise through the windows of the cabin, and Piñata went up to the roof platform to get pictures. We took our time sleeping in and making breakfast. I stayed after Rash, Piñata, and Chef Boyardee left to tape my pinky toes. My left toe is red, a little swollen, and tender. The morning hiking wasn’t terrible, even with my late start. ...

Chipmunks and The Lookout (6/23, 6/24, 6/25)

Day 118, 6/23: Lost Pond shelter -Rutland, VT (17.6 miles)
I woke up to Durable and other hikers packing up around 5:30am, then to Rash and Piñata eating breakfast around the fire pit with Train Wreck around 7:00am. Train Wreck was talkative while we ate breakfast, and we left camp around 8:30am. Today was town day, and we were excited.

No bear, that’s my food (6/20, 6/21, 6/22)

Day 115, 6/20: Bennington, VT -Story Spring shelter (19 miles)
We packed up from the comfort of the hotel and headed to the office. We found Rick and Tom sitting on a bench outside and said hi. They got caught in the thunderstorm yesterday going down the steep rocks into Bennington. I can’t imagine doing those steep rocks in the pouring rain.

Mile 861.9 – Mile 978.1

Mile 876.8
I saw my first bears today! A mom and 2 cubs. I was so excited. Stretch was oblivious and I’m glad he was.
I’m a little nervous to be stealth camping after seeing bears. But I am camping with Ghostrider and we hung our food bags.

891.8
So many day hikers! It is a National Park and a Saturday but wow. I saw a hundred people or so today and zero bears.
I kept stopping today to pick blackberries. ...

Flushing’s McPherson Continues Solid Play at Tullymore Classic; Kueny Says Farewell

I Hike Because…

The trail is my home
The AT will always be my OG Trail, but any trail that takes me into the wilderness is home to me. It’s where I feel like I can truly just be me. It’s where petty things don’t matter. It makes you realise what you need to survive, to be content, and full of positivity.
I’m comfortable with who I am
No one likes being at a strange party – out of their element – until they find the resident pet. ...

Mile 1,160 on the AT – From the Father of a Thruhiker

I’m officially more than halfway done with the trail.
more than 50% complete.
Whoah.
My Dad wrote me a letter for my birthday a week ago and coupled with my crossing the halfway point on the trail, it seemed appropriate to share. So, with his permission, I’m posting it here.

Words from the father of a thruhiker:
Happy Birthday! 29 years ago, the day you were born, I could not have imagined where you would be today! ...
