Golf Is Everywhere: The New Yorker Edition

Next week’s New Yorker cover features Donald Trump playing golf on the White House lawn.

Notably, he’s breaking windows.

Yes, that’s a metaphor of the author view of the current state of American politics. The author has some thoughts about the First Duffer at the link above.

But this blog is not about politics, so I will quickly pivot to golf history.

If Trump actually were to hit balls around the White House, he would not be the first. President Eisenhower had a putting green installed on the White House lawn, and in this photo, seems to be hitting full shots:

There are a photos of Obama, Clinton, H.W. Bush and Ford playing on the White House lawn in the article at the link. Ford also seems to be taking a full shot. Given Ford’s predilection for hitting spectators, I hope he’s playing away from the White House.

Tiger Takes Up Competitive Body Building

In a surprise tweet this morning, Tiger Woods announced that he has given up his pursuit of Nicklaus’ eighteen majors to focus on competitive body building.

I’ve been writing for years that the PGA TOUR and the rest of the golf industry need to prepare for Tiger’s exit from the game. Further,  I’ve long thought that his exit would be sooner, rather than later. The notion of him hanging around until he was fifty to play the Champion’s Tour was just patently absurd. I even correctly predicted that he was done winning Majors after YE Yang stole his mojo.

But even the Original Golf Blogger never saw this one coming.

In retrospect, however, perhaps we should have seen the signs. Hank Haney wrote in The Big Miss of Tiger’s obsession with training, even blaming his injuries on his regime.

And then there was this Vanity Fair cover:

My guess is that Tiger pursues body building with the same single mindedness with which he once pursued golf, and wins championships in his weight and age class.

Fortunately for our eyes, Phil Mickelson has made no similar pronouncements.

Well it finally happened.  With the tremendous amount of help from my stepdad and family I packed and moved my belongings from my apartment in South South Alabama to where my family lives in Lynchburg, VA.  After a week at home visiting and basically being a sloth in true grown up fashion I got my  mom to take me to Gerorgia to get on the trail.    We stayed the night at the lodge and then after  a breakfast and signing in I was ready to bid my old routine a due. ...

First week on the Appalachian Trail

Pre Trail 
Packing last minute was stressful but efficient. Enjoyed the road trip down to Georgia with my brother,  thankful he drove me down. We camped near the parking lot that’s 1.1 mile into the trail and had a nice fire. Met Ethan, the bass player for Sierra Hull. Got a good night’s sleep. 
Day one
