Famous Golf Blogger Named To USGA Board of Directors

Responding to criticism that it is “out of touch” and fails to represent the average golfer, USGA President Thomas O’Toole announced today the appointment of famous golf blogger Tony Korologos to the Executive Board.

“We have heard and understand that the average golfer feels as though we don’t represent their interests,” O’Toole said. “Mr. Korologos gives a voice to the average golfer, of whom tens of millions read his blog.”

Korologos, who in 2004 started one of the original golf blogs, Hooked On Golf Blog, said “I had to think long and hard before accepting this appointment. In the end, however, I decided to make the sacrifice of time that being on the board requires. I feel as though somebody has to start injecting a degree of sanity back into the game.”

“The first thing I’m going to do is to work to ban Footgolf and 15-inch holes from courses,” Korologos said.

Although I’m disappointed that wasn’t chosen, I’m happy for my friend.  Just as bringing a US Open to a public course represented a step in the democratization of the blue-blood organization, so too is naming a regular joe to the board.

3/4 cup raisins
1 cup lightly salted almonds
1 cup pitted dates
1/2 cup shredded coconut (optional) 

Step 1: Add the raisins, almonds, dates and coconut to your food processor and mix until combined.

GolfBlogger Is Official Golf Blog Of The Masters

(Ann Arbor, Michigan) – Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne announced today that GolfBlogger.Com will become the Title Sponsor and official Golf Blog of The Masters Tournament.

No April Fools: Tiger Will Not Play The Masters

Yesterday (March 31) came the announcement that golf fans have been waiting for: Tiger will not play The Masters in 2017. On his website, Woods wrote:

Unfortunately, I won’t be competing in this year’s Masters. I did about everything I could to play, but my back rehabilitation didn’t allow me the time to get tournament ready. I’m especially upset because it’s a special anniversary for me that’s filled with a lot of great memories. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since I won my first green jacket.

I have no timetable for my return, but I will continue my diligent effort to recover, and want to get back out there as soon as possible.

Next up on the will-he-or-won’t he Tiger Watch: The Memorial on June 1 – 4. Tiger has won there five times. Muirfield is one of a half dozen courses which account for more than half his career victories. If any course can be his “get golf ready” practice range, it is Nicklaus’ Muirfield.

As for the US Open at Erin Hills, I predict he won’t play, unless he plays all four rounds at The Memorial.

Augusta Changes Mind on 1968 Masters, Pledges To Work For More Enjoyable Golf

Declaring the results of the 1968 Masters “a travesty of justice,” Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne says the club has retroactively awarded the Green Jacket to Roberto DeVicenzo.

In the 1968 tournament, DeVicenzo made a birdie on the par 4 seventeenth, but Tommy Aaron, his playing partner accidentally entered a 4 instead. DeVicenzo did not check the card before signing it, and under the rules of golf, the higher score had to be counted. If the correct score had been counted, DeVicenzo would have faced Bob Goaly in an 18 hole playoff the next day.

A meeting was held in Bobby Jones’ cabin, but in the end, there were no rules to fix the problem. If he had signed for a score lower than he earned, he would have been disqualified. By signing for one higher, he had to accept the score.

“I play golf all over the world for 30 years, and now all I can think of is what a stupid I am to be wrong in this wonderful tournament,” De Vicenzo said. “Never have I ever done such a thing.”

Payne said that the slate of recent rules miscues also prompted the club’s board of directors to examine ways to make the game of golf more fun. This is just the symbolic beginning of our movement, Payne said. The club also intends to restore the original tees at Augusta, and to push for changes to USGA and R&A rules increasing the ball cup size by two inches.

“We remember the excitement generated by Tiger’s chip in from off the green in at the 2005 tournament, and think that a larger hole would allow more people to replicate that shot,” Payne said.
