Trail Update Four: Failed Hitchhikes, Five Guys, and Floods

I made it out of the Smokies with only a partial day of bad weather! Still feeling great, and I can’t believe I am in week four already.
Sunday April 14th: Day 16
My day off at the Fontana Hilton shelter (it has showers!) was a great idea, and I missed a whole day of terrible weather at the start of the Smokies. All the weather alerts warned about dangerously high winds above 3500 feet, which is essentially lower than all the peaks I planned to spend the next week crossing. ...

Sorry Virginia, but I Hath no Blues!

Week 9, day 58-64
I last left y’all on a post zero day with a plan or perhaps a crazy scheme following a crazy weather system. We named it a weekathon – that’s to say after the weather threw us an unexpected yet appreciated zero the tramily vowed to hike a marathon every day for a week!

Prior to this, personally I’d never hiked more than 25 miles in one day on the AT. I’d actually hiked a total of only four days of 25 miles or slightly more. ...

The Continental Divide Trail, or Righting The Wrongs Of The Past……..

When we last met I had just discontinued my thru-hike of the Appalachian trail. Needless to say, I should have gone with my initial instinct and hiked the Continental Divide Trail.  In my defense, the whole thing played out differently in my head and I made a mistake. Now it's time to right past wrongs and hit the trail again.

An Unruly Urge – How my Life Led to the Trail

The morning we drove into Baxter State Park to summit Katahdin, the sky unloaded on us. First with rain, then with hail. Fat chunks of ice drummed the roof of Ol’ Man’s utility van. From my seat in the back I watched as the barrage pelted the windshield, obscuring the dark road ahead. This was the day that I would begin my Southbound Appalachian Trail thru-hike.
Hiking the A.T. was not a childhood dream of mine, ...

Armed Man Sought after Threatening Hikers on AT

A man who apparently threatened hikers on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina on Sunday, April 21, is being sought by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Michael Hensley said in a Facebook post that the hiker, a white male, calls himself Sovereign and had threatened other hikers at Devils Fork Gap and also in Madison County. He is believed to be heading toward Sams Gap on the Tennessee-North Carolina border.

How to Spend Three Days Hiking and Camping Around Moab, Utah

Now that I’ve moved out to Colorado, Western wilderness adventures are that much more accessible. To keep myself sane while working a desk job and dreaming of my next long trail, I’m doing my best to take advantage of the geography. Blogpost, pt. I: Hiking to Feel at “Home”

Hi! Hello! Pearl, here! This spring, I am starting my northbound (NOBO) thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). My start date: April 24, 2019. I will be starting my second thru-hike. I’m starting at the U.S.A-Mexico border, in California, and hiking North, to the U.S.A-Canada border, in Washington. Approximately, 2,650 miles. Although I am hiking in one general direction, it is a singular place that I am returning to: Home.

They say the first two weeks of any thru hike is the hardest. You’re getting your hiker legs, figuring out gear, packing way too much food and water, and trying to learn all the other necessary skills to survive the hike, like social dynamics and how to not look homeless to get a hitch. The first two weeks and two hundred miles have taught me so much about myself and this world.
Here is my journey:

Anatomy of my first AT marathon

Prior to my accident, running a marathon was almost a weekly endeavor. If you have read any blog about the AT you know the terrain is challenging and unforgiving.

Unlike my past races, my first marathon, 26.2 miles, on the AT came with little warning and just happened. Like everything else out here on the trail.

We awoke at Groundhog shelter to depressing rain. Some of us were protected by the three sided structure with a sleeping platform that had a severe slant towards the middle causing all of us to roll on top of each other during the night. ...

Judge Orders Review of New Coal Leases on Public Lands

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration did not adequately address the environmental effects of coal mining when it sought to increase mining on public lands.

Morris said the Interior Department did not adequately study the environmental effects of mining as required by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970. ...

Appalachain Encounters of the Surreal Kind

Here is a recap of my first few days on trail:

Two weeks ago I stood, freezing in Greenland, at a checkpoint of the race I was competing in. I had just watched other skiers pull ahead of me while skiing a loop on a fjord. Sometimes you’re in an open area and too exposed. Sometimes you’re on a ridgeline. Sometimes you’ve got nothing but brambles and thorns on either side of you.
Such was my experience hiking down into the NOC. Very steep. Not a lot of places to go. ...

Reattempting a Thru-hike

In 2018 I started a thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail. I walked 1020 miles and then decided to stop. A year later, in 2019, I’m starting a thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail again. I’d like to take you into the process of deciding to stop a trail while on it and the process of deciding to reattempt a thru-hike on the same trail.

I thru-hiked the PCT in 2016. I went into it knowing I would probably hike the AT the following year, ...

40 Days, 40 Nights

Has it really been that long? As I post this, I’m still contemplating my next move. Only 75 miles through the Angeles National Forest and down to the Mojave Desert. First 30 winds along the ridges cresting the Angeles Crest Highway, taking one up to Baden-Powell, Windy Gap, S Mt. Hawkins, and Mt. Williamson before coming down to Cooper canyon on the way to Three Point. The latter half snakes between spring camps and fire stations toward Hwy 14, ...

My PCT Dreams and Why I’m No Longer Hiking

I planned to start hiking the PCT on April 18 (my birthday), but now I can’t.
PCT Dreams
I’ve spent a lot of the last two years dreaming about the PCT. I began counting down to this endeavor when I secured my PCT permit in November. First by the months, then by the weeks, and then, as my flight to San Diego was quickly approaching, by the days.
My start date was getting so close. I started imagining myself on trail and could very clearly envision myself dirty and windblown from the desert with feet that ache from 20+ mile days. ...

Surviving and Loving the First 500 Miles on the Appalachian Trail

Starting out
I started the Appalachian Trail (AT) on March 2 with my sister Laura and we have been on the trail now for over a month. We have currently covered over 600 miles and have walked through three states, currently on the fourth. I’m proud of us for making it a quarter of the way thus far.
Only about 25 percent of people who start the AT actually finish. A lot of people quit within the first few days of the hike. ...

A Love Affair with my Trekking Poles

I never imagined that I would be the type of hiker to use such a luxury item as trekking poles. I mean c’mon, I’m a young, fit, and coordinated woman, why would I need two extra limbs to simply walk over 2,000 miles?! *slaps palm to forehead*
I am neither going to confirm nor deny that my youth size poles from REI have or have not saved my life a countless number of times in the past 200 miles…but I will confirm that I reach for those aluminum sticks every morning before setting off for the day. ...

Where to Send Mail Drops on the Appalachian Trail 2019

We’ll be the first ones to say it: with few exceptions, it’s not really necessary to send mail drops on the Appalachian Trail. Thru-hikers have the option of hiking through or hitching into a town every three to seven days, which is more than enough frequency to get by without sending yourself food to hostels or other remote locations. The majority of trail towns will be able to provide at least something to get you through the next section of trail. ...

A Day in the PCT Life

A Southern California desert sunrise is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. On this particular morning I’m in a valley, and as I begin packing up my tent, the sun is getting brighter, making the mountains to the east a dark silhouette. The mountains to my west are warming up, dusky blues turning to purple and pinks- the reverse of the sunset the night before. The Pack Chooses the Hiker – My First Time in REI

The logistics were taken care of.  I Googled where the closest REI was, I got the day off work, and I even convinced Burt and our roommates to get the day off work as well so we could take the three hour journey to Pittsburgh together to make a day of it.  I had a healthy lump-sum of money from some extra work I had taken on, and I decided I wanted to spend a little bit of it on trading in my old Ozark Trails 45L Walmart pack for a pack that more specifically fit me and my needs.  ...

Learning to Listen in the First 150 Miles

Greetings from the AT! I can’t believe it’s already been three weeks out here. The earth is moving from gray winter to vibrant green spring. More chickadees and wrens are singing now; they wake me up with their lilting songs every morning. There have been thunderstorms, sweltering sunny days, wind gusts, hail, and every weather pattern in between. I have already met so many people with interesting stories, exciting personalities, and varying reasons for hiking the Appalachian Trail–yet here we all are together, ...

My Go-To Sources for Pre-PCT Inspiration

At the time I publish this piece, I am less than a month away from hitting the Pacific Crest Trail. And, holy moly, am I anxious. This admittance of pre-adventure anxiety is something new I’m trying. In the past, I have had this habit of rejecting the possibility of any pre-adventure jitters; I hoped that by never giving my fears any mental energy, they would go away. It was my embodiment of “fake it til you make it.” Some people perceived this veiled confidence as bravery, ...

His and Hers PCT Gear List

April 18 is only a few days away, which means that we are only a few days away from starting the PCT! We thought we’d jump on here to share our his and hers gear list.
You’ll see that we carry very similar gear. We won’t deny it, we are one of those matchy-matchy couples *insert eyeroll here*, but good gear is good gear.
You’ll also see that we like to keep our gear pretty light. ...

Trail Update 3: Gear MVPs and Biggest Miles Yet

Tuesday April 9th: Day 11
I continued my day off at Gooder Grove in Franklin today and ran all sorts of errands: laundry, mailing some things home, showering, etc. It was lovely to see some of the earlier guys come in, and we met up at the Lazy Hiker brewery (yes, that’s two days in a row) to catch up and enjoy some drinks. I met Tater Bag (because he eats mashed potatoes from the bag, ...

Mile 100 and the Best Nero of All Time

Making the Decision to Nero
Sitting at the water cache and mile 91.2, I knew I had a decision to make. Warner Springs was still 18 miles away but I knew that I could push myself and make it there the next day. But it would only be my second day back on trail after two zero days to heal my ankle. I also knew that it was going to be 85 degrees and that the section would have little if any shade. ...

AT Part 2: Slipping Through The Smokies

Albert Mountain, NC Davenport Gap, TN
Distance: 138.9 mi
Total Distance: 238.9 mi

We had just settled into our sleeping bags for the night when a piercing howl shattered the silence of the shelter.
The cry was answered by several nearby yips and cackles.
“Are those coyotes?”
“Yep.”
They sounded close. Very close.
Journey through Nantahala

The Skunk Ape: How I Mentally Trained for My Thru-Hike

I am not a runner. You may mistake me for one however. It might be because I run five days a week. Or it could be because I own a treadmill. You are probably confused because I have a running coach.  It also doesn’t make sense as I have friends in the running community and I am a part of running groups. But, I am NOT a runner.
I’m a hiker; a hiker who has tapped into running to help better prepare myself for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. ...

Trump Moves to Speed Up Oil, Gas Pipeline Construction

President Trump has signed two executive orders to speed up construction of oil and natural gas pipelines, but his actions on April 10 do not appear likely to affect two pipelines that would cross the Appalachian Trail.
The first order directs the Environmental Protection Agency to tighten rules to make it more difficult for states to halt pipelines by citing the Clean Water Act, and the second transfers authority for approving the construction of international pipelines from the secretary of state to the president. ...

Week Three: Smokey Mountains

Day 15: 11.8
Woke up pretty early and rolled out of camp before the sun was completely up. Stopped for hot breakfast at Cable Gap Shelter with Kelly and Further. Coming into Fontana was a graceful fall down a large hill. When I got to the bottom, Lionheart and Falcon were in a shuttle and scooped me so I could get to the lodge for my package. We had to wait for a while so Kelly and MF/Slim caught up to us. ...

PCT Week 1: From Border Wall to Moms Pies

Day 1:
After snapping a super goofy photo of my oh so anxious self I said goodbye to my cousin Stephanie and made my way down the trail.

The first few miles I hiked in absolute elation. It was pure bliss. I feel like people dramatically underestimate the beauty of this first section. It is absolutely stunning compared to the relatively flat nature of Texas. At about 5 miles or so in I posted up under the shade of a big old tree. ...

The Four Pines Hostel

If there’s a place on the Appalachian Trail deserving of a television show, it’s the Four Pines hostel.
First, we have the lead character / hostel owner, Joe. Joe stands a lean 6 feet 6 inches tall and is between 66 and 68 years old, depending on who’s asking. Though never a thru-hiker himself, Joe wears his silvery hair long and gray-black beard longer, like an AT veteran. Below the beard, a weathered piece of twine holds a row of multicolored shark teeth. ...

Reflections from day four, five, maybe six. I lost count.

Trail life is beginning to settle into routine.
In the mornings, we wake, and we walk. That’s what’s on the agenda. Yesterday was the same, tomorrow will be no different. Next week, next month – no change.
My clothes don’t dry, they only vary in levels of dampness, or become saturated with a new liquid: rain, creek water, sweat – don’t rinse, just repeat.
After sitting for just a few minutes my legs become complacent, stubborn to resume their role as my primary method of transportation. ...

Day 3

Today was a hard walk. After “sleeping in”, Starfish and I hit the trail just after 8. There was blue in the sky and spring in the air, with fresh yellow-green moss giving the forest its first vibrant coloring of the year.
The trail climbed steeply over crumbling rain-slicked sheetrock for the first mile. Within minutes, sweat streamed off my nose as my head bent towards the ground – I refused to look up because I knew there was only more up, ...

Windstorms, Europeans, and Pie

Day 3.
7 Miles.
I wake to a pretty pink sunrise, ready to tackle the first 7 miles of the day that will carry me into Mount Laguna. A few hikers pass me as I’m packing up, including the friends from Munich I made on the first day. As I begin walking it gets hot quickly. After awhile I feel a little sick and shaky, so I stop in the shade of a desert bush and consume small amounts of both food and electrolytes, ...

Ten Days From the Beginning

I’ve repacked my backpack somewhere close to 50 times by now. Changed gear and went on smaller hikes to test it out. I’ve spent hours pouring over logistics and putting resupply boxes together. My mind is right. I just need to get there now.
Too much time before my start date leaves a lot of uncertainty. Thinking about all of the ”what ifs” that could go wrong. Asking myself questions like, ”am I ready, ”or are you sure this is what you want?” Yes, ...

Bear Bags, Burnt Crocs and Border Crossing. Week Two on the AT.

Day 9
After our day off in Helen it was a bit of a shock to the system to be hiking again. This day was the windiest and coldest yet. We ended up hiking further than we’d planned in order to get to a lower elevation out of the wind. It was once we got to camp that my day got interesting.
As evening drew in I started to try and hang my bear bag. My bear bag is just a dry sack in which I put all my food, ...

Gear Review: Therm-a-Rest Oberon Zero-Degree Sleeping Bag

The Therm-a-Rest Oberon is Therm-a-Rest’s newest zero-degree sleeping bag, weighing in at 2.5 pounds. This bag has all the trappings of a protective sleep system, including a 20D DWR shell fabric, deep hood, generous draft collar, and piles of 800-fill treated goose down. On top of being a high-quality zero-degree, the Oberon is pretty. Check out that gradient folks. This might be one of the most attractive pieces of gear I own.

It would have been prudent to practice sleeping with my quilt/ sleeping pad setup before setting out on the AT, but I’ve never considered myself a prude.
In any case, I spent most of my first night on the trail tossing about Рhalf my body on the hard shelter floor, half on my half-deflated sleeping pad Рin a futile attempt to cover more than like 60% of my body with what felt like a M̦bius strip of down. ...

Day 1

It’d be a lie to say that I didn’t have second thoughts about getting on the trail today.
Those thoughts started the second I woke up. I was lying in my old bed at my parents house, where I’d been sleeping ever since my apartment lease ended last Friday. The warmth of thick heavy blankets was, as usual, hard to depart from. But even more persistent in begging me to stay was that overwhelming feeling that’s impossible to escape at one’s childhood home: nostalgia. ...
