My First 40 Miles on the AT: Approach Trail to Neel’s Gap

My first five days on the Appalachian Trail was an eye-opener. For better or worse, I decided to hike the Approach Trail, which proved to be some sort of hazing ritual. To me, it felt like if I could get through that first day, those stairs at Amicalola, then I could make it. The ATC staff at Amicalola offers an orientation for thru-hikers. I didn’t get the free Snickers their advertisement promised, but I did get some peace of mind that I had the top ten recommended pieces of gear. ...
