Mountaineers Golf Heads To Furman Intercollegiate
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 23, 2017) – Hoping to bring the momentum of record-setting rounds at the Seminole Intercollegiate, the West Virginia University golf team travels to Greenville, South Carolina, for the Furman Intercollegiate from Friday-Sunday at the Furman University Golf Club.
Furman University will host 21 total teams at the event. In addition to the Mountaineers and Paladins, the following programs will be in attendance: Akron, Chattanooga, Clemson, Dartmouth, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Harvard, James Madison, Marshall, Presbyterian, Samford, Temple, USC Aiken, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Western Carolina, Wichita State, and Wofford.
West Virginia is with Wofford and rival Virginia Tech for the first round at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club. The Mountaineers, Hokies and Terriers will tee off starting at 1:40 p.m.
“Furman Golf Club is a classic design that will put an emphasis on accurate iron and play and having a sharp short game around the greens,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “It would be nice to see us carry some momentum over from our performance at Florida State into this event.”
Alan Cooke, Chris Williams, Tristan Nicholls, Max Sear and Etienne Papineau will compete for WVU at the event. Just two weeks ago, the five Mountaineers set a number of program records at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida. The squad shot a record-low 277 in the first round before carding a 54-hole record-low of 849 for 15 under par.
Cooke lowered his own program record with a three-round score of 206 for a record 10 under. He recorded his third career top-10 finish, taking fourth place. Williams joined him in the top-25 with a career-best of 213 for three under par.
Tristan Nicholls carded a 68 in the first round, becoming the fourth Mountaineer this season to shoot 69 or better. Sear, Cooke, Williams, Papineau and Nicholls have combined to shoot 10 rounds in the 60s this season.
Live scoring is available for all three days via Golfstat.
