Starting the Te Araroa – A Baptism of Sun, Sand, Mud and Roads

Starting the Te Araroa
It has been almost two weeks since I started the Te Araroa trail in New Zealand. Before this, I had done many trails one to two weeks in length, but this is my first long thru hike and I liken it to moving from a swimming in a pool to swimming in the ocean. Fun and enjoyable, but then an unexpected big wave comes, tosses you about and you come up spluttering thinking ‘what just happened!’
Wave #1
The first wave comes in the form of getting to the start of the track. ...

Four Days In The Smokies: What I Ate, Freezing Temps, & New Friends

I may or may not be writing this from the Fontana Dam ladies heated bathroom where I may or may not have taken a hot shower, washed and dried out my frozen socks, and laid my Thermarest to sleep for the night. It was almost 7pm when I got to the dam and figured by the time I get to the road and call the shuttle provided by the Fontana Village Resort I’d miss the restaurant closing at 9pm, ...

A Guide to Sustainable Brands in the Outdoor Industry

here are few things better than time spent enjoying the humbling magic of our precious earth, and we can all agree our time outdoors is made more enjoyable by the range of products designed to outfit every type of adventure. Do the companies making these products do anything to safeguard the dignity and worth of the humans, animals, and resources involved in production? ...

Appalachian Trail emotional cairns – Introduction

Every introduction needs an intro
I am sure “Appalachian Trail emotional cairns” is an intriguing title but I will explain. Before I introduce myself and talk about the motivations behind my 2019 Appalachian Trail thru-hike attempt, I will start with a deep reflection about the Appalachian Trail and the hikers who once walked its long miles. I will examine and pay tribute to not only the trail’s wilderness splendor, it’s mind-boggling distance and construction marvels, but pay homage to the sacred emotional cairns left along its vast expanse. ...

Why I am walking 2,200 miles in 2019

The Appalachian Trail is more than just a physical challenge, a great majority of being a successful thru hiker is a mental undertaking. What makes a person successfully walk 2,200 miles through the rain, over mountainous terrain, sleeping in unfordable conditions, with a probable injury and in the company of only themselves most of the day? The short answer to this would be a strong mentality behind completing the trail. In 2017 the Appalachian Trail Conservancy reported that 19% of people who attempted a northbound thru hike were successful. ...

Why Do We Hike?

I’ve always wondered why the trail calls to me so much. I know I enjoy hiking, but why do I like it so much? Why do I enjoy spending days, weeks or months walking through the wilderness? Why do we hike? It’s arguably the main question hikers are asked before and after a long hike or a thru-hike.
I recently had the opportunity to complete one of the best professional training courses I have ever taken and the topic was “Self-Awareness”. ...

Prepare For The Unexpected

Hikers spend months to years planning their thru hike.
When should I set my start date?
How much time should I take off from work?
What backpack should I use?
Should I tent or hammock?
These are all common questions a thru hiker has before embarking on their journey.
However, most of my thru hike I was unprepared for.
Despite the research, money, and time I put in preparing for the 2,190.9 mile journey, I still ran into the unexpected.

How to Visit Every State Park in Your State

When thinking of iconic spots, big mountain hikes, or awe-inspiring vistas, our country’s national parks are often the first thing that comes to mind. While these parks provide recreation for humans and important ecosystem conservation, they often outshine the vast landscapes and unique regions that are protected by the nation’s state parks. With over 10,000 parks dotting the map, America’s state parks give 739 million annual visitors the chance for adventure in their own backyards. State parks are often free to residents and can be an amazing alternative to visiting our sometimes crowded national parks. ...

Lone Wolves to Trail Families: Who’s Who in the Thru-Hiking Social Dynamic

A large and integral part of a thru-hike is the social aspect.  As with most human endeavors, there’s a broad spectrum of interest—some people are in this for the scenery, some for the fastest known time, some for the solitude, some for the party, or somewhere in between. Many hikers coalesce into “Trail Families” or “a crew,” while others hike solo, or with a companion/partner.  There’s often cross-pollination between groups, especially at common choke points, like Cascade Locks or Kennedy Meadows South on the PCT, ...

If you’re anything like me (and the fact that you’re reading this tells me you are), then you have had a hard time finding proper gear for backpacking and hiking. When will outdoor retailers realize that not everyone has the same body type? I mean, women had a hard enough time when the industry decided “shrink it and pink it” was what all women needed. We have hips for crying out loud! Just use your eyes! ...

Backpacker Radio #23: Heather “Anish” Anderson on Her Calendar Triple

“Expectation is where failure lies.” – Heather “Anish” Anderson
oday’s guest is very fitting for our 23rd episode, since she is arguably the Michael Jordan of backpacking.  In a world where setting just one FKT (fastest known time) is a lifetime achievement, Heather “Anish” Anderson has set the self-supported FKT on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Arizona Trail.  She is also in a small, exclusive club of triple triple crowners- those who’ve hiked each of the triple crown trails three times each.  ...

Food Review: Good To-Go Backpacking Meals

Backpackers know that food is an essential component of any adventure. Yu want to feel satisfied, well-nourished, and fueled up for the day with food that is nutritious enough to keep you moving and help your body stay in good repair. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to place “nutritious food” and “hiking food” in the same category.
There is little doubt in my mind that when I thru-hiked the AT in 2017, much of the extreme pain and exhaustion I experienced was related at least partially to the fact that I was subsisting on a steady diet of chemicals and garbage. ...

You Can Walk Anywhere As Long As You’ve Got the Time

Well, here goes nothing huh?
In about 4 months time I am attempting a north-bound thru hike of the Appalachian Trail.
Sometimes it feels hard to say out loud, like you are outwardly admitting you are crazy. But I guess in reality I am a bit crazy because how many people want to leave their nice job, warm bed, and friends and family to carry a 40 pound backpack up and down some mountains for 5 months? ...

Sawyer Micro Squeeze vs. Original Sawyer Squeeze [Video]

New for 2018, the Micro Squeeze is Sawyer’s new filter, not to be confused with the two-ounce Sawyer Mini, which historically has had a slower flow rate than the Sawyer Squeeze. In this video, Dawn and I give the Sawyer Micro Squeeze and the original Sawyer Squeeze an out-of-the-box test run, and compared the two in size, flow rate, and package inclusion. We also nearly freeze our fingers off collecting water, and Dawn gets distracted by multiple dogs.  ...

The Top Footwear on the Appalachian Trail: 2018 AT Thru-Hiker Survey

Each year as part of The Trek’s annual thru-hiker survey, we ask hikers about the footwear they used, and this footwear data remains my favorite to analyze and write about. These surveys originated when several of us who write for the website were discussing our surprise that we saw so few traditional hiking boots on our thru-hikes, even though most of us had worn hiking boots until our first long-distance hike. I remember my excitement when Zach Davis surprised me with that first dataset on the Appalachian Trail hiker class of 2014,  ...

We finished at Springer Mountain on November 11th at 10:15pm after hiking 30 miles in 15 hours. We wanted to end big and we did!  We started our journey on May 20th, summiting Katahdin on August 27th then flying back to Harpers Ferry, WV to finish south. Mentally Successful Thru-Hiking

Focus on yourself, not what you have
When it comes to planning a successful thru-hike, one aspect that I feel many have overlooked is mental preparedness and maintaining mental health. Most beginner long distance hikers seem to focus a lot on “things” and forget about themselves. They have the tendency to believe that if they just have the best gear on the market, that’s what will make themselves successful. Sad to say, but as with pretty much everything else in life, ...

The Hard and Fast Numbers of the Appalachian Trail

Well, I did it.
I started April 22 and finished August 31. In 132 days (4 months and 9 days), I took every step between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin Maine. I’ve celebrated with the friends I hiked with, I’ve had cake and champagne with family, I’ve visited nearly every friend I have in the Southeast, and I’ve even gone back to hike a 100 mile section just for fun. The House of Representatives voted Friday, Nov. 16, to end more than 40 years of legal protections for gray wolves in the continental United States.

Every thru-hiker has heard of the Virginia Blues – that time when a NOBO has been walking for long enough that the ‘honeymoon’ feeling is gone, and the miles just seem to drag on through the green tunnel. When I made my list for why I am hiking the AT, I included that I wanted to seek out Type 2 fun. With the weather recently, this hasn’t been difficult.

This is not a knock on thru hiking.  For 2.5 months, I pretended to be a thru hiker, and had an incredible time doing so.  I applied for a permit just like a thru hiker, fastidiously planned like a thru hiker, trekked dutifully North from Hart’s pass and tagged the border like a thru hiker, then reversed course and pulled long days of walking South for months.  ...

A Banana, a Pickle, and a Hotdog Walk into the Grayson Highlands…

The Virginia Blues were looming. We spent a night in Bland, VA to avoid some 40-degree rain, and I wondered if the town’s name was an omen of what was to come. After all, Shenandoah and the Virginia Triple Crown (Tinker Cliffs, McAfee Knob, and the Dragon’s Tooth) were behind us, but there were still 120 miles to go in the longest state of the Appalachian Trail.
But Sobos get the opportunity to hike on Halloween, ...

And some items just stand out in the crowd. Here are 2018 thru-hikers’ most valued “essential” items from their long-distance hikes.

Federal Judge Deals Setback to Keystone Pipeline

A federal judge in Montana has temporarily blocked construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, saying the Trump administration ignored the project’s effect on climate change.

Work on the long-disputed pipeline was to have begun next year but now is blocked by the judge’s ruling on Thursday, Nov. 8, until the federal government more fully reviews the pipeline’s environmental impact.
One of President Donald Trump’s first acts after taking office was to sign an executive order approving the pipeline, ...

How to train for the PCT – Hike 1,800 miles on the Te Araroa

Most people train for the PCT by doing day hikes or a short multi-day hike. I on the other hand, plan to train for the PCT by doing 1,800 miles on the Te Araroa (TA) in New Zealand.
Yes. You read that correctly. A 1,800 mile shakedown hike! Go hard or go home is what I always say. Actually, I have never said that. So, you may be wondering, why would I train for the PCT by hiking 1800 miles? ...

A Trail of Magic: Day Five on the Long Trail

It’s a town day!
My first thought when I wake up. Followed quickly by less than four miles and I will be back in civilization! Four miles is nothing! I did fifteen yesterday! I pack slowly and take my time making breakfast. We have all the time in the world. Town is the solution to all potential problems. Sleeping pad popped? Purchase another in town. Fall in a river and soak all your gear? Dry it all in town. ...

Water Off, Hikers On: Short Course in Sustainable Trail Design

There are times when you can learn to do something right by initially doing it wrong. And then there are times when you think you’re doing something right, but you’re actually doing it wrong, and therefore you don’t learn a thing.  This second sentence may best describes most folks who design, construct, and maintain hiking trails in the Northeast.  Well, it’s high time to tell them, for the sake of everyone, that they’re doing it wrong. ...

Dropping Everything: Figuring Out My Next Step While Walking 5 Million

In a little less than four months, I will be setting out on the adventure of a lifetime. I will spend approximately six months hiking the Appalachian Trail.  Six months.  That’s half of a year.  Twenty-six weeks. One hundred and eighty days.  It will be the biggest physical undertaking of my life thus far.
Am I Crazy?
Some people think so.  I, however, don’t call it crazy.  I prefer ambitious, motivated, determined, or driven.  Passionate.
But I’m not crazy. ...

Wait, You’re Doing What?!?!

The conversation usually goes something like this…
“Hey David! What have you been up to?”
Me- “Oh, you know, just planning to go hike the Appalachian trail this spring.”
“Wow, that’s pretty cool, what part are you going to hike?”
Me- “…The entire thing… All 2189 miles of it…”
“Wait, you’re doing what?!”

How did it get to this?!
Thru-hiking the AT is one of those things that has been in my mind since I graduated high school in 2007. ...

How Would Your Thru-Hike Have Been Different Without Your Son?

Since completing our thru-hike, I have often been asked what the thru-hike would have been like without my son.
The first—and most accurate answer—is that there would not have been a hike without him. Not for another 20 years, at least, if ever.
Secondly, to say he was “along” with me implies that he was a passive follower. I imagine him in people’s mind’s eyes shuffling 20 yards behind, staring at his feet, and kicking the occasional rock in absent frustration. ...

Butternut, Laraway, Maple Syrup: Day 4 on the Long Trail

I wake up at 7am,
cursing myself for not waking up to my 6am alarm. I want to get an early start today since we have almost fifteen miles to walk, the most miles I’ve ever walked in a day. I skip breakfast to save time, eating a protein bar while I walk. The sky threatens rain, but it holds off. I have my rain gear on anyway because even the slightest breeze through the trees sends droplets cascading down on us from the canopy above. ...
