Chinook Trail – Meeting Up With The PCT From Hood River, OR To Lost Lake Resort

I knew this day would be the most brutal of the entire Chinook Trail journey. Over 5000 feet of vertical from the Columbia River, up Mt. Defiance and past it to Rainy Lake for the night. I kicked off the day with a great breakfast at Broder Ost, a Scandinavian restaurant with tasty omelettes served in square cast iron skillets. Needed to fuel up for a big day. The way out of Hood River was mainly on lightly traveled neighborhood streets, ...

Insulation Plant Under Construction Near Harpers Ferry Generates Local Outcry

In July 2018, ground was broken for the construction of an insulation manufacturing plant in Jefferson County, West Virginia. This 24-hour-per-day Ranson plant will melt basalt and spin it into fiber which will be used in insulation for homes and business, bringing roughly 150 jobs to the local economy. A similarly sized Rockwool plant in Romania boasts another 300 jobs indirectly provided through services and logistics. This plant will be built near Route 9, in close proximity to where the AT enters Harpers Ferry. ...

Oregon, Drought, and Night Hiking with Wolves

We grabbed some more milkshakes (24oz each), spilled one all down the front of my hiking dress (again), and made for the climb out of Cascade Locks. It was absolutely worth the discomfort. While singing silly songs, intentionally butchering the lyrics, and eating lunch, we all came to the same realization: if we could average 27 miles a day through Oregon, we would be done in three weeks.

To be honest, it wasn’t that hard. Doing high mileage through Oregon just means you have to get up early and stop messing around every hour on the hour (which I do all the time). ...

anyonlands National Park is a land of red rocks, filled with mesas, canyons, buttes, and arches sprawling across 337,598 acres. My Final Days on the Continental Divide Trail

Glacier National Park is nearly empty this time of year.  A few locals visit, driving around to witness the change in seasons.  After a couple early October snow storms, the clouds retreated for a week and a half, allowing the sun to make a full return.  While visiting friends in California, I kept a close eye on the weather forecast and the park’s webcams, always plotting my return to finish up the last 75 miles from Two Medicine to the border crossing at the end of Chief Mountain Road. ...

The Maryland Challenge Southbound

As if the Appalachian Trail weren’t hard enough, many hikers seek out extra challenges to spice up their journeys. There’re the classics like 10-Before-10 and 12-Before-12 where you try to do the respective number of miles before the hour, as well as the belly-busting food challenges, like the Half Gallon Challenge and the endless individual restaurant-sponsored pancake and burger challenges up and down the trail. 2,190.9 miles, 6 months, 9 pounds, 36 liters,

A Day in the Life of Wildlife

Life on the trail is very different from the real world. It’s hard to share every day and moment, but for those of you wondering, here is a rough sketch of a typical day for me.
The Morning
2:30 – I wake up needing to pee. I try my best to ignore it and go back to sleep.
6:45 – My alarm goes off. I roll over in my sleeping bag and pretend it’s not time to wake up. ...

From Driftless to Desert Dweller: How Grand Staircase Made Me a Thru-Hiker

Growing up, I don’t think my family went camping one single time.
I was raised in a more typically Midwestern way, with occasional weekend trips to the mall to buy Aeropostale hoodies.  As I neared adulthood I’d go to an overly-expensive liberal arts school, unaware that I’d be paying for that education for the rest of eternity. (Really cutting into the gear fund.) There, while I did have the best professors I could ask for, I mostly spent my first years learning how to un-feel my feelings. ...

Last weekend Isaac and I went on a quick overnight back-country trip at Abram’s Creek, which is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Why I Will Tackle the Appalachian Trail

In 2019, I intend to spend six months hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. 2200+ miles. A life-changing event. All that sounds far more grand than the daily reality of sleeping on the ground, showering infrequently, enjoying dehydrated soups for every dinner, and wearing one outfit, which is why, to keep myself motivated and accountable, I’m setting out my reasons to give the AT a go.
Hiking is My 2019 Quest
In 2018, I decided I would read 365 books. ...

As safe as I’ll ever be

Sarah Grothjan recently wrote an article for Outside detailing some of her experience with sexual harassment and solo adventuring. Not for the experience she described with a man she called Josh, but for the parade of harassment she described that women deal with regularly, I resonated with her. After reading the article, I wrote a Facebook post sharing some of my own experience with sexual harassment. Then, I deleted it.
I deleted the post more out of a desire to keep some of my life private than anything else. ...

What the heck is a flip-flop thru hike and why in the world am I hiking one?

What the heck is a flip-flop?!
No one who has learned that I’m thru hiking the AT has been shocked, not in the least bit; in fact most have wondered what has taken so long. The first and obvious question consistently has been,“You’re thru hiking with Winnie, right?!” The second question, however, is where everyone seems to get confused.
Me: ”So next years our year, the money’s right, the timing’s right, we’re thru hiking the Appalachian Trail”

The Foothills Trail: A 77-mile Taste of the Southern Appalachians

The idea for the Foothills Trail, a National Recreational Trail located in far western South Carolina, began in the 1960s as an effort to preserve and protect the beauty of the Appalachian Foothills. A trail corridor linking Table Rock State Park in the north/east to Oconee State Park to the south/west, was completed in 1981.
The trail features sturdy bridges crossing over numerous rivers, beautiful waterfalls, a jaunt around a corner of Lake Jocassee and, on the eastern half of the trail, ...

Gear Review

Just over a year ago, I began my first preparations for my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. Giddy with the thought of a new and exciting adventure, all I wanted to do was plan. Yet life continually took over. I found myself scurrying around in the final days of my departure, kicking myself for procrastinating. Once I hit the trail, I began to realize that my lack of planning was perfect!
Early on, I began to realize that it would be nearly impossible to have a base weight under 20 pounds with my old gear. ...

Chinook Trail – Bluff Mountain Trailhead To Panther Creek / White Salmon (Days 3 & 4)

Woke up early in the morning to frost on the tent and a beautiful sunrise, with a view of Mount Hood in the far distance. My Biggest Fear: Blisters

Let’s talk blisters. Often very small but ever so painful. Every time you take a step you feel a sharp pain, hundreds of little knives digging into your skin every single second. The presence of blisters can easily ruin a hike.

When I tell people I am going to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, they often wonder if I’m scared of bears, getting lost, hitch hiking and falling off cliffs. Truth be told, my biggest fear of hiking the Appalachian Trail is blisters. ...

Lost on the Long Trail: WHAT’S IN THE BOX

WHAT’S IN THE BOX
Don’t worry, it’s not Gwyneth Paltrow’s head.
It’s my resupply!
I mentioned in my first post that I decided to send myself resupply boxes instead of buying all my food in my selected resupply towns. Finding My Footsteps

“Where did you come from?”
Who said that you’re asking, well that was my mother. Where did I come from? That is a great question. I was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania the home of Yoccos Hot Dogs and “The Great Allentown Fair.” My first memories of being outside are filled with images of my father and I spending time fishing. What A Long Strange Trek It’s Been (NY, NJ, & PA)

Every day has been an adventure since I returned to the trail after my surgery! I’ve now hiked over 1,000 miles, and the trail continues to surprise me.

New York
New York was much more scenic than I expected as the trail runs thru several state parks. I saw another bear in New York but this one wasn’t quite as scary as my first encounter since he was behind bars. The trail runs thru a zoo and past the bear cage and hikers are allowed to walk thru the zoo for free! ...

What I learned from leaving the PCT with only 300 miles left

After 2,350 miles, I ended my 2018 Pacific Crest Trail flip-flop this week at Crater Lake. It wasn’t where I was planning on finishing, but excruciating tendinitis in my right foot forced me to call it a hike. I only had 300 miles left. I was so close...

The Trail Changes You

It changes you. It’s supposed to.
That’s why we go out there, you know. That’s why we seek out the solitude of the wilderness over and over again. Because it changes us; we need it to. It’s the air we breathe and the only place where we can feel like ourselves now. That’s what it is to me. I go out there because I need to feel that wild and free. I need to wash the filth of the world off of me. ...

Mom Please Never Let me Hike the Appalachian Trail

“Mom please never let me hike the Appalachian Trail. There will come a day when I will want to hike the Appalachian Trail, but you must not let me.” This is what I told my mom two years ago, while I was hiking the Long Trail. It was nearing the end of the day, during that time of the day which many call golden hour, because everything lights up in a shimmery glow, I was slightly delusional from exhaustion and dehydration and was hiking up a mountain. ...

OneFoot’s AT Adventure: It’s Life on Steroids

“You’re out there for days, weeks and months by yourself where you have nothing to deal with other than your own thoughts, dreams and especially who you are as a jerk – the way you’ve conducted your life and the way you’ve treated people.  Because the trail is indeed a life changing experience for everyone if they’ll open up and talk to you about it.  One of the mysterious things about hiking the Appalachian Trail is the impact it has on people’s lives.  ...

The Comedown from Katahdin

It’s been about a month since I finished my thru-hike. I’ve been wanting to write – wanting to put into words what it all meant to me, but I’ve struggled to pick up the pen (or, you know, keyboard).
The Post-Trail Blues
I’ve struggled with a lot of things, actually. I’d heard of post-trail depression, of course, which is a fairly common state-of-being to go through post-trail. You go from a constant state of zen mixed with euphoria – being pumped full of endorphins on the regular, ...

Mountaineering Mental Preparation: Getting your mind right

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”  -Henry Ford
Picture this… you’re on a  long, uphill slogs on the mountain of your dreams where you are gaining 2,000’ and all you can think is, When is this ever going to end? This is so hard, I am so tired, I cannot take this anymore. You’ve just begun your trek to the next base camp and these negative thoughts are on constant replay in your head and you can’t snap out of it. ...

The Maryland Challenge – Type 2 Fun

Maryland (Sept. 12 – 13)
14 hours, 38 minutes
The following will describe my experience as well as provide an additional five tips that may aid you in the Maryland Challenge if you ever choose to do so.

Solo Woman: How I Got Good at Being By Myself

Perhaps it started with my journey to Amicalola Falls without a companion, or even a year prior on my first solo road trip to North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Parkway. In recent years, I have embraced my introversion and introspection more and more. On the Appalachian Trail, I often reveled in hiking alone for several hours, or even for the whole day before reaching the comfort of camp and companions.
Following the end of my hike, ...

owering 19,341 feet above the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest peak in Africa. The first ascent was made by German mountaineer Hans Meyer in 1889, when the mountain was part of German East Africa, and has since become a major destination for outdoor enthusiasts who flock to Tanzania each year with hopes of summiting Uhuru Peak and checking off this once-in-a-lifetime achievement from their bucket list.

Smokebeard’s Final PCT Gear List and Review

A lot of people have asked me about gear – how many pairs of shoes did I go through, did my tent leak, how was my backpack, that sort of thing.  Here’s a list of the main pieces, along with some smaller trinkets which helped me along my way.  One thing I discovered during the trip was how many people consider gear as single-hike (or even half-hike) disposable.  For instance, a popular brand of ultralight gear warranties its stuff for “one 2500 mile thruhike”.  ...
