Hurricane Threatens East Coast; AT Hikers Warned to Get Off Trail

As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast, Appalachian Trail hikers are being warned of dangerous conditions ranging from falling trees to flash flooding.

The hurricane has been upgraded by the National Weather Service to a Category 4 storm capable of creating catastrophic damage. The storm is expected to hit near the border of South and North Carolina Thursday or Friday and move inland to Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia by Saturday and Sunday.
“Be prepared to get off the trail and seek shelter or postpone your hike due to conditions that will make hiking the trail extremely hazardous,” the Appalachian Trail Conservancy warns. ...
