Highs and Lows of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania (Aug. 30 – Sept. 12)
229 miles, 13 days
This was a hard state to compress into a length that would keep even my own attention span, but I tried none-the-less. Here it is – broken down, elaborating on the highs and lows (one day, very low). To explain the header – I passed the 1000 mile mark, woo!

700 miles to

To say that it has been an interesting week would be an understatement.
I’m not even really sure what happened. All I know is I felt like I was supposed to get off trail and go home. So I did.
The bottom line is my back/hip/leg issues seem to have returned. Not in full force (yet anyway) like last year, but enough that I got a little spooked. I don’t want it to be like last year, ...

Food Review: Packit Gourmet Homemade Backpacking Meals

Food is one of a thru-hiker's key concerns. How much, how often, and damn it had better taste good. Backpacking meals tend to have the benefit of being more calorie dense and nutritious than instant meals and Snickers bars. I'm not bashing the latter - both have their place in my food bag. Started as a way to feed their own family during outdoor adventures, Debbie and Jeff Mullins turned their backcountry culinary skills into a family-owned and operated business, Packit Gourmet.

To Stove, or Not to Stove? That is the Question.

There is a long debated conversation between thru-hikers: Do you carry a stove? On one side, you get warm food, more food choices.. on the other is added weight, and the more complex dinners/extra coordination needed. Is there a right answer? Trail PMS. The kind that doesn’t discriminate against gender.

Oh hey, fancy seeing you here!
I must first apologise for my MIA status and lack of updates, I’ve been out saving the world you see. Clarke Kent by day, Superman by night. If I were a guy… Anyway, I must have got carried away because I’ve only just put the cape to bed.
In all seriousness, where am I and what have I really been doing? Right now I’m sat at a picnic table at The Ralph’s Peak Hikers’ Cabin in New York waiting on my pizza delivery. ...

Book Six, Chapter Six – Five Days of the Smokebeard

(With apologies to Redford and von Sydow)
Sep 12
We left Harlequin Bridge around 7, and got to High Bridge by 930.

Faceplant saw a bald eagle fly slowly down the river here. Dammit!

7th National Park.

My luck held for almost the entire day, we only had rain for about 10 minutes. Once we were back in the woods, the trail followed a river up a canyon all day. It reminded me a lot of Deep Creek Canyon down in the desert at mile 300. ...

I last left off with the cliffhanger that Miles and I planned to split up and hike separately once we left South Lake Tahoe.
It didn’t happen.

Leaving Tahoe to head back to the trail proved more difficult than we first thought. There was no room for cars to pull off on the main road in town, so we walked for about a mile before finding two of the motorized scooters often found on the sidewalks. ...

I’ve been trying to decide of there’s an appropriate metaphor for hiking the PCT. Maybe a baseball game?

The Best Part of the Appalachian Trail

I summited Mt. Katahdin a week ago and something I am frequently asked is, “What was your favorite part?” and I can easily say it was the people I met. 1.  Find suitable shelter for the duration of the danger period. Best locations would be safe from flooding and tree damage,

Optimal for hurricane conditions

Road Detour and Returning to Trail

Out of Leadore, I got a hitch to Bannock Pass and began my 156 mile road walk around the two fire closures that were lurking off to the west.  Most of this was on paved roads but among the many options, I chose this route due to its similarities with the Continental Divide bike route and part of the walk would coincide with road that was designated as a Montana Scenic By-Way.  At this point in my hike a road walk was welcome to avoid the seemingly never ending routine of walking up hills to walk right back down them on the other side.  ...

Appalachian Trail Photo Exhibit Comes to D.C.

A photo exhibit titled United By the Appalachian Trail, curated by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, is coming to the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington D.C.
17 photographs from various artists will be on display in the building’s Rotunda from September 17th through the 21st. The event is sponsored by North Carolina Senator Richard Burr. While the exhibit is meant to present the beauty of the Appalachian Trail, there will be images that display some of the realities familiar to those that hike the trail’s entirety: there is at least one picture of thru-hiker feet. ...

Why I Love Night Hiking

Have you ever night hiked?
It’s one of the most exhilarating feelings in the world.
Imagine it. It’s pitch black. Your senses are heightened. Your headlamp is turned up to 250 lumens. Your only vision is the tunnel of light shining from your forehead. You can see the stars close to perfect.
For me, night hiking is fun! But it is also an integral part of my thru hike. Here are some reasons why night hiking is awesome:
Break up your miles
For me, ...

The Highs and Lows of New Hampshire

When I met Miss Janet in Pennsylvania, she told me that thru-hikers arrive in New Hampshire feeling like they’re 10 feet tall, only to quickly be humbled by its tough terrain. (For those of you who are unfamiliar, Miss Janet is probably the most well-known trail angel out there; she follows the hiker bubble north from Georgia each year supporting hikers along their journeys). I did not feel 10 feet tall when I got to New Hampshire. ...

Magic and Betrayal

Well, we made it through Steven’s Pass before the fire got too bad. Hiking through ski resorts is very strange, and this is the type of area where I always get lost. I can find my way through tricky trail sections, even when it seems like the trail disappears altogether, but I will always get lost when we go to town or even approach a civilized area. Weird, right? But, that’s a side issue. My real struggle this leg was with my shoes. ...

Hurricane Season and SOBO Thru Hiking: Part 1

Adding to the list of bonus challenges as a Southbound thru hiker: hike in prime time hurricane season.
Mostly that means hypothermia conditions, flash-floods, and days of nonstop cold rain and wet gear. Even the Appalachian Trail Conservancy provides hurricane updates. The first week into September and we’re currently experiencing steady rains, remnants of Hurricane Gordon with Hurricane Florence about to slam Virginia and West Virginia, along with Isaac and Helene on the horizon. I’m about to hit the 1,000 mile mark in Pennsylvania and I’m facing a personal and real dilemma: yellow blaze a 46-mile section where I’ve heard of multiple sources of flooded trails and streams, ...

Trail Correspondents Episode #13: Technology Use on a Thru-Hike

Technology on a thru-hike.  Combining these words tends to rouse some heated debate.  Some people abstain entirely from technology during their hikes, opting only to keep in touch with loved ones while in town.  Some are nearly constantly plugged in, listening to music and/or podcasts all day, posting Instagram updates every time they get service, constantly checking Guthook’s app, even watching movies in their tents at night.  Most thru-hikers fall somewhere in the middle.
We check in with our hikers to get their take.  ...

Hurricane Threatens East Coast; AT Hikers Warned to Get Off Trail

As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast, Appalachian Trail hikers are being warned of dangerous conditions ranging from falling trees to flash flooding.

The hurricane has been upgraded by the National Weather Service to a Category 4 storm capable of creating catastrophic damage. The storm is expected to hit near the border of South and North Carolina Thursday or Friday and move inland to Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia by Saturday and Sunday.
“Be prepared to get off the trail and seek shelter or postpone your hike due to conditions that will make hiking the trail extremely hazardous,” the Appalachian Trail Conservancy warns. ...
