Defying Disabilities

Will this generation of thru-hikers understand a “Cat’s in the Cradle” moment? Because I had one today and I suspect, if this pilgrimage goes as hoped, I will have many more.
Healthy as a Horse

First, an update. Physicians have all had their say and I am strong – or at least strong enough physically to take on this trail challenge. That was enough of an endorsement for me to serve notice at the institution where I have worked for the last 20 years. ...

GEAR and WHY

BIG THREE

Let me start with my big three just to give an idea of my gear
Tent-Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1 with foot print.
Sleeping bag- REI Magma 10 degree with liner and Therm-a-Rest NeoAir pad.
Backpack-Osprey Atmos 65 AG without brain
The combined weight of the above mention gear weights in at a little over 10 lbs. Now let’s dive into gear that is special to me.

How to Think Like an Ecologist During Your Thru-Hike

The following is a guest post courtesy of Aaron Sidder, Editor in Chief of Afield Trails. Afield Trails develops mobile apps for hikers to help them discover more about the places they visit. Get trail-specific field guides for wildlife, plant communities, and geology, and try their Rocky Mountain National Park app for more in-depth info about the subjects discussed in this article.

Full confession: I’m a slow hiker. I dawdle as I stroll, frequently stopping to literally smell the flowers — and catalog them with my not-so-thin wildflower guide. ...

The Long and Winding Road to the Appalachian Trail

Why?
That is, of course, the first word that tends to pop out of a person’s mouth the moment you tell them you’re planning a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (otherwise known simply as “the AT”) from Georgia to Maine. Usually, it is accompanied by a(n extremely) skeptical gaze. That is, of course, if they even know enough about the AT to fathom what it is you’re trying to do. I have to assume that most of you do, ...

But seriously…what are you afraid of?

I’m trying to figure out why deciding on life is hard.  Why making forward moving decisions are the scariest.  Why can’t we just look at something and go “yep, this is it, today my life is going to be turned 360.”  Is it because we’re afraid of what people will think? Are we scared of failure? Are we scared that it’s not going to be what we want it to be?
Maybe I should look in the mirror and ask myself these questions. ...

Last Minute Jitters and Remembering the Whys

I have less than a week to go until my start date, and I’m doing everything I can to try and make the start of my hike go smoothly.
So far, that basically means running around in a mild panic trying to get last minute things accomplished. I’ve already left my home state of Wisconsin and packed away everything that I hopefully won’t need in the next few months. I’m spending the week before my thru hike at my boyfriend’s house in Nashville- he’s going to be hiking with me for the first 40ish miles to Neel’s Gap. ...

One of the first questions city dwellers tend to ask about my plans to thru-hike the AT is why. Wild Pigs in the Night
The Javelina’s started calling shortly after nightfall. Remembering The North

August
Jojo and I loved Maine.  The infamous black flies are gone by early August and we had no trouble with them whatsoever.  The 100 mile wilderness is speckled with lakes and allowed us to camp next to water every night.  We covered over 205 miles in 26 days for an average of almost 8 miles a day.  Not a huge daily total but the elevation changes made it a very respectable accomplishment for us.  Maine can best be described as the land of moose poop and rock stairs. ...

Why Every Hiker Should Take A Map and Compass Navigation Course

Whether it’s for a short day hike, or roughing it for a few days in the backcountry, there are certain essentials that most hikers won’t leave home without. Water, food, and first-aid tend to be popular on lists of backcountry essentials, but two of the most overlooked pieces of gear seem to be a paper map and reliable compass.

I have used an Osprey Exos 58 for years and believe it has been a great all around choice for backpacking. Apparently, I’m not alone in that thinking. The Siren Call of the AT

It started out as a whisper. I could hear the Appalachian Trail calling to me and my response was to say not now but maybe later, maybe eventually I’ll get to you. Over the course of fifteen years, through law school, a move to a new city, several job changes, and a marriage, my response remained the same. After a heart-related health scare, the AT changed from a whisper to a scream. And I realized that later was no longer acceptable. ...

What I Leave Behind: Comfort, Deodorant, and Expectations

I leave tomorrow.
Nerves rack my body. My pounding heart can be heard from across the hotel room. What if I hate it? What if I get injured? What if I fail? These questions bounce around in my head for hours as I try to sleep.
My bag is packed. Boxes are filled for resupply. Equipment is tested. Loose ends tied up. As I look ahead to this 2,200 mile beast I’ve come to challenge, I feel a strange disconnectedness. ...

A Peek in Our Packs: A First Aid Kit for Both Me and My Dog

As March 1st gets closer, my dog Flynn and I have been cracking down on the smaller details of our Appalachian Trail thru-hike. After several weeks of brainstorming, and seeking the advice of some of the veterinarians I work with, we have finalized our first aid kit!! Well… mostly!
Because there was was so much cross-over between dog and human first aid kits, I decided to combine both of our kits into one, with the plan that I would carry the bit of extra weight that the dog specific items would add. ...

The Three Kinds of Ultralight – Be Ultrawise With Your Choices

If you’re a hiker, and you ever use the Internet, you know there’s a lot of discussion about reducing pack weight.   One phrase I hear a lot is “how do I go ultralight?”.  The answer is complicated, because it’s the Internet, but also because at no point do you “win” and finally become “ultralight”.   It’s a process.  The most important thing is that your gear has to work for you.   There’s a pretty hard rule against cotton when outdoors, ...

Sugar and Summits: Hiking the Appalachian Trail with Type 1 Diabetes

Picture this: you’ve been hiking all day, since an hour after sunrise, the pack on your back carrying everything you need to survive out here in the woods. The trail has steepened significantly over the past hour, transitioning from stunted evergreen trees to bare rock. Finally, you reach the summit, legs shaking a bit from the climb, stomach growling. As you shed your pack and glance at the horizon, your heart drops; the line of dark clouds crawling towards you kills any thoughts you had of resting on the summit (and all your hopes of camping dry tonight – the shelters will be PACKED, ...

Simplified Resupply Strategy Spreadsheet

Less than 50 days before lift off  ✈️
Preparation plays an essential part in a thru-hike starting smoothly. Some preparation has proven to be fun and exciting; researching, purchasing and testing new gear, getting into top physical condition and making new connections with hikers  and sharing stories and experiences. On the other hand, some preparation has seemed daunting. In my case, that included my resupply strategy. Especially as an international hiker that doesn’t have the luxury of having friends and family sending packages from home. ...

What it Takes to Hike Every Mile of Trail In New Hampshire’s White Mountains

Red-Lining: The Greatest Hiking Challenge You’ve Never Heard Of
White Mountain National Forest is a legendary bastion of ruggedness. Appalachian Trail thru-hikers almost unanimously regard the 100-mile section through the Whites as the hardest part of their 2,200-mile trek. But outside of thru-hikers, generations of adventurers have wandered into the Granite State’s high country in search of challenges to test their mettle and earn well-deserved bragging rights. In the nineteenth century, it became fashionable among Boston blue bloods to prove their manliness by summiting Mount Washington. ...

Come as you are

I can say that in my whole life I have only ever reached rock bottom once. During the second week my husband was on hospic,e after sleeping little and crying much, I had nothing. I had no energy, barely an appetite, no emotion, nothing. I was a completely empty vessel. There was nowhere else for me to fall. You’re constantly adjusting and compensating for each little thing that comes your way. ...

We all sat at the tables outside, talking excitedly about what the end of the trail might be like. ...

Maine or No Maine: The List

Seems a bit surreal to us. It’s always been something not quite tangible; always in the “someday” column of life’s to do list.
“I’m thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail”. Thousands of people say that each year. In 2016, ...
