Learning by Doing in the Big Ditch: A Solo Trek of the Escalante Route

The Grand Canyon is the type of place that you can’t understand or appreciate from a single vantage point.  In photos, it looks so vast that it’s difficult to have a sense of its underlying architecture.   Even standing standing at the rim for the first time, I felt relatively unmoved.  It was objectively impressive, but so large that it felt difficult to wrap my head around, harsh and unrelenting.
It took me four days of hiking to understand what all the fuss was about.
