Trail Update Four: Failed Hitchhikes, Five Guys, and Floods

I made it out of the Smokies with only a partial day of bad weather! Still feeling great, and I can’t believe I am in week four already.

My day off at the Fontana Hilton shelter (it has showers!) was a great idea, and I missed a whole day of terrible weather at the start of the Smokies. All the weather alerts warned about dangerously high winds above 3500 feet, which is essentially lower than all the peaks I planned to spend the next week crossing. ...

Sorry Virginia, but I Hath no Blues!

Week 9, day 58-64
I last left y’all on a post zero day with a plan or perhaps a crazy scheme following a crazy weather system. We named it a weekathon – that’s to say after the weather threw us an unexpected yet appreciated zero the tramily vowed to hike a marathon every day for a week!

When we last met I had just discontinued my thru-hike of the Appalachian trail. An Unruly Urge – How my Life Led to the Trail
