Addressing FAQs: “Are you alone?”

Of all questions, the one I am asked most on trail is simple and direct.
“Are you alone?”
Usually, likely, it’s harmless and stems from honest curiosity. And, most times, I am alone, just following the Appalachian Trail’s white blazes to Maine. Sometimes I move quickly and hop over fallen logs or up hills. Sometimes I take up a very casual stroll and sing, loudly, to the trees.
