A Week of Mountain Passes and Solitude

This past week has been such a rich experience. I swam in freezing cold lakes, felt the intensity of the sun while climbing up steep switchbacks, saw the setting sun light up the mountains, navigated around and over snow, and got to spend a whole week in the mountains with my two friends and relatively few other hikers. All of these reasons made this one of the most special stretches of the trail for me.
I can say with complete certainty that the hiking I’ve done this past week is the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever completed. ...

The Mcdonald’s Forty Miler

My feet propel over gritty sand in boisterous strides, as my eyes scan the five feet of visible trail ahead of me. The narrow beam of light produced by my headlamp wavers, dancing with each connection of my foot to the ground. I trust my legs to guide my trajectory through the darkness, a daring feat, as the trail plummets steeply on the right to a creek below. In the past hour I have already had a couple of close calls, ...

SOBO Tips for Katahdin and 100 Mile Wilderness

JD and I are enjoying our first zero day in Monson at the Shaw’s Hiker Hostel. We slept in, ate some fruit, soaked our feet, and have not put on our boots once. Man, does it feel good to be here. With almost 115 miles behind us, we feel like we are starting to settle into the thru-hiker lifestyle, but we have a lot to learn. We are happy to have the 100 mile wilderness under our belt, ...

Morale on the Trail and Dead Electronics – Day 11

Waking to the sound of silence is nice when it means the sound of rain is absent. It’s a stark contrast to last night’s rain storm and I was glad to be in the lodge while the rain and thunder came down hard. I moved slower than desired this morning getting ready to hit the trail. How to Achieve a 5-Star Pee

As anyone who has spent significant time on a thru-hiking trail should know, one of the most common conversation topics is about your bowel movements. Poop stories get a lot of attention, but I think peeing outdoors deserves its time in the sun too (pun absolutely intended). When I was hiking the PCT, we used talk about getting the best pee… a 5-Star Pee. What is a 5-Star Pee, you ask? Well, it’s not arbitrary. You have to earn each of those stars. ...

Over the course of a couple decades as a runner, hiker, and general lover of the outdoors, I’ve tried the gamut of women’s ‘athletic wear,’ or athleisure as it’s apparently known (this is news to me).

I heard about this walking thing in March…
One month earlier I had it all figured out. I was gymming everyday/pushing and siting up every night. Addressing FAQs: “Are you alone?”

Of all questions, the one I am asked most on trail is simple and direct.
“Are you alone?”
Usually, likely, it’s harmless and stems from honest curiosity. And, most times, I am alone, just following the Appalachian Trail’s white blazes to Maine. Sometimes I move quickly and hop over fallen logs or up hills. Sometimes I take up a very casual stroll and sing, loudly, to the trees.
Every now and then I fall into pace with someone else and walk with them for a few miles, ...

After hiking back up to Kearsarge Pass from our day in Bishop, we only managed to hike 1.5 PCT miles to set us up for Glen Pass the following morning. Considerations Before Taking Your Dog on Your Thru-Hike

There tends to be a pretty negative reaction when people ask about bringing their dog on a thru-hike. Fearmongering the Sierra

It can happen on any part of the PCT, about any part, really.
Every year partway through the desert the discussion and dilemma begins. Will the Sierra be passable when we get there?
A wise hiker would do research online where possible, and ask people along the way who would have the right information. We’ve Reached Kennedy Meadows and the Stoke Level is High!

Reaching Kennedy Meadows has been the biggest milestone of the trail so far; it means the end of the desert and start of the Sierra. It felt awesome to walk down the road to the general store while the hikers on the patio clapped to welcome and congratulate us.

The needle on my stoke meter was buried when we reached Kennedy Meadows!

Unexpected Detours and Fabulous Zeros

Here it goes: Virginia Pt 2.
I’m hoping to slowly but steadily catch up to the present here… Still really behind. This blog will cover my time from Pearisburg to Rockfish Gap.
It actually seemed like spring when we left Pearisburg.
It was great. There were flowers and green stuff everywhere. It all dwindled back down to brown again as we climbed up into the mountains, but still.
There really isn’t anything that exciting in the 600’s on the AT. ...

5 Things to Know About The Barkley Marathons: Ultrarunning’s Most Fascinating Race

On June 10, 1977 James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr, escaped from Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Tennessee along with six other convicts. For 55 hours he ran through the woods surrounding the penitentiary until he was caught on June 13. He had made a total of eight miles.
Gary Cantrell, a neighbor to Brushy Mountain State Penn and longtime runner watched the news coverage with scorn. “Eight miles” he scoffed to himself. ...

Trailcation in Durango: A Mental and Physical Reset

After seven zeroes in the lovely, nearly engulfed in smoke, town of Durango I am ready to get back out on that dirt path.  While my shin does not feel one-hundred percent, I feel as ready as I can be to start hiking again.  I will rejoin the trail where I left off at Wolf Creek pass with the intention on going 15-20 miles a day over the next few weeks.  My plan is to arrive at  the Interstate 70 crossing around July 1st which is when my parents will be flying into Denver for a visit! ...

The Hike Continues; A “Real World” Pause

Harpers Ferry to Hamburg
I took three zeroes in Harpers Ferry to spend some time with my mom and aunt. They arrived from Minnesota, by Amtrak only 29 hours late, with an unplanned overnight in Chicago. Despite the late arrival we had a nice visit.  We enjoyed the park, took a ghost tour, ate well, and drank local craft beers.  On Sunday we attended mass at the historic St Peters Church.  Overall we had a great visit but I was eager to get back at it.   ...

Pacing Problems: Why I Split Up With My Original Hiking Partner

I always tell people that thru-hiking with someone is bigger than living with someone. Even if you share a tiny studio apartment with an intimate partner, you’ll usually have some time each day during which one or the other of you is not home.  When you thru-hike with someone, you share not only every waking moment, but also every sleeping moment, i.e. lit-ruh-lee all moments. For obvious reasons, this can be challenging.   But my experience thru-hiking the AT proved that it can also be awesome. ...

How Hiking 1,200 Miles Has Changed Me

At the border of New Mexico and Colorado, there was a barbed wire fence that was bent over touching the ground.  It was easily stepped over as I passed the wooden sign indicating the trails entrance into the Rio Grande National Forest.  No official state sign, but still a joyous moment to be walking out of New Mexico after beginning my journey at a different barbed wire fence 31 days prior.

The Psychological Impact of a Thru-Hike on Children and Adolescents

When considering the most difficult part of a long distance hike, many thru-hikers cite the mental game. The physical challenges are undeniable and those thru-hikers who choose to leave the trail, often point to the psychological toll that the extremes of long distance hiking had on their ability to persevere.
We often hear professional athletes and Olympians talk about the mental focus required to overcome adversity and meet their lofty goals. Historically, however, there has been very little discussion of the impact these extreme stresses have on a person’s mental health. ...
