In The Mail: Golf’s Iron Horse

Golf's Iron HorseGolf’s Iron Horse: The Astonishing Record-Breaking Life of Ralph Kennedy

In the mail this week was a review copy of Golf’s Iron Horse: The Astonishing Record-Breaking Life Of Ralph Kennedy.

Kennedy was a founding member of Winged Foot, whose life was changed in a chance encounter with Englishman Charles Leonard Fletcher in 1919. When Fletcher told Kennedy that he had played some 240 courses in his lifetime, Fletcher took it as a challenge. By the time Kennedy was done some forty years later, he had played golf on more than 3,165 different courses in all forty-eight states, nine Canadian provinces, and more than a dozen different countries. Kennedy played golf some 8,500 times over his lifetime, the equivalent of teeing it up every day for twenty-three straight years.

The feat led the New York Sun to declare him “golf’s Lou Gehrig” in 1935.

I really look forward to reading this book, and will have a review as soon as possible.
