New Year and New Anticipation

New Year and New Chapter
It’s a new year and a new chapter is about to be written.  I am so looking forward to my thru-hike.  I believe I will face many new challenges, both mental and physical.  However, 2017 was extremely challenging for my husband and I.  In July Jon had foot surgery that later got infected and went to the bone.  Consequently, he ended up having his big toe amputated after 3 different surgeries.   ...

My Camera Gear on the AT: From “Fully Loaded” to “Bare Bones”

There’s no doubt that the gear hype among photographers is just as mesmerizing, bottomless, and situational as with backpacking gear. Wether you’ve taken the traditional or ultralight route, there’s a camera set up out there that’ll meet each of your needs while still producing amazing content.
With a smaller frame, and injury prone joints, my main focus has been keeping the weight in my pack down. That being said, my first attempt at putting a gear list together had me hauling over 5lbs of camera gear. ...

What Worked, What Didn’t, and Next Time

Long time no see, readers!
It’s been a minute since the end of my PCT hike and I’ve had time to reflect on things. I spent a while being sad; missing the trail tremendously. Missing the freedom of nature and the simple task of ‘just walking’. Coming home was a mess of anxiety and a clusterfuck of tasks needing to be done. Figure out the bills, find a job, etc…
But I’ve started planning my next PCT thru-hike attempt. ...

Best Hostels on the Appalachian Trail: 2017 Hiker’s Choice

Appalachian Trail hiker hostels not only provide showers and beds for weary hikers, they’re the source of some of the best AT memories and are a crucial part of the trail community. For the second year in a row, we polled thru-hikers on their favorite hostels along the Appalachian Trail. Some favorites held their place (Shaw’s and Woods Hole stuck the top two slots again) with brand-new Boots Off sliding into the Top 10, a great sign for this burgeoning facility. ...

🎵 It’s the Five-Month Countdown

Am I Doing This Right?
And so it begins…my journey to the Appalachian Trail.  This is what’s going either to build me or break me; the preparation, the training, the laziness, the success, the whole nine yards.  This is not only the start of walking the trail, this is the start of something so new; the start of a test I have never taken.
You never know what to expect when starting on the trail.  To all the first-timers, ...

Part 4: Where
I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and Santa brought all that new gear you were asking for! We are nearing the end of this five part series. When the word “where” comes up in a conversation over the AT, it’s most likely about where you’re starting. Are you hiking NOBO, SOBO, or Flip-Flop. I will touch base on these directional choices, and include additional “where” topics to focus on when planning.

Start Date for the Appalachian Trail

When choosing a start date for a through hike there are many factors to consider.  My job, finances, when my lease is up, the weather, and avoiding peak times to save wear on the trail and avoid norovirus.  I forwent a lot of these considerations when I decided to start my hike on March 13th.  You see, my father passed away on March 13th, 2015.

Winter Appalachian Trail Thru Hike – Day 8 (23 miles)

Up into the Smokies I headed.
I barely managed to pack up and get to the toilet block in time this morning. After that it was a mile or so road walk from the shelter over Fontana Dam and into the Smokies NP. This also began a 8,000ft (3km) vertical climb up including 4 peaks along the way.
The day was rather good. I climbed out of a layer of cloud sitting on the valley floor and for the rest of the day was treated to some great views of the dam below. ...

I woke up at 6 and started hiking shortly after. Like yesterday, it was raining and I was walking through the clouds. The light of my headlamp was reflecting off both off these to such a great extent that I could barely see what I would step on next. It made for some slow progress until the sun decided to show.
From then on I moved as fast as I could. I was running late to meet up with @grantwalkson for a little day hike. ...

Numbers

It’s safe to say that most hikers like to count. They count days, miles, pounds, liters, ounces, calories, States, and more. Hikers like to make lists too, some even do elaborate spreadsheets and graphs. Some hikers are more obsessive about the numbers than others.  I will admit to counting ounces and keeping track of certain numbers too. For example, how long until March 24, 2018? As of today, it is 3 months, or 13 weeks… or 93 days. ...

My sister asked me the day I got home “are you ready for the postpartum period?” I think my answer was yes because I thought I was ready, but mostly I thought it wouldn’t happen.
I was so ready to be done with the trail. I was certain that because I was so ready, I wouldn’t be sad to return to a life of convenience and routine. ...

Why I’m Hiking

I’m a college freshman. I have a full-color map of the Pacific Crest Trail right next to my dorm room door, which I tap on the way out to classes every day, just like a football player on his way out of a locker room. My dream is to complete a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. All 2,668 miles of it. Mexico to Canada. In four months, because I have to get back to university before the Fall 2018 semester starts. ...

Writing Letters Home to Continue Your Counseling Connections

Stoveless on the Appalachian Trail

I said I was going to write about financial wellness today, but something else has been pushed to the forefront.  Friends and family are wondering why I’m going stoveless, and probably how I’m going to survive.  For those of you who don’t know, most long-distance hikers opt to carry a small fuel canister and an attachment that will hold a pot above a flame fueled by the canister so you can cook.  Important because these are quicker than a campfire and are allowed in areas where there are fire bans.   ...

Part 2: The Who, What, When, Where, and Whys!?

Part 2: What?
With Christmas approaching, my mind has been at ease from the anticipation of the AT; although, if I stop to think about it, I can’t wait! Whenever I have a few moments or hours, I try to read new blog posts and articles on The Trek, scanning for stories, ideas, and inspirations for the trip. I’ve started to go through all my gear, picking and choosing what I need to take. If I sit back and contemplate everything that needs to be done before the start of the trip, ...

No Longer Nameless: My Trail Name Found Me

As an aspiring thru-hiker, my lack of a trail name sometimes felt like a brilliantly lit billboard proclaiming, “She’s a wannabe!” Being a nameless newbie backpacker made me feel incomplete at best and at the worst, like an all-out imposter. I know a name is just a name, but having one gives me strength and a sense of belonging I didn’t have before.

ATP: Appalachian Trail Physiology or, Adenosine Triphosphate

Once upon a time there was a beautiful organelle named Mitochondria who lived in a thigh muscle cell of an Appalachian Trail hiker. She was in charge of providing energy to the cell when the hiker started walking. She needed the hiker to eat well, drink water, and get good rest at the end of each day.

With each step the hiker took, her good friend Aldolase received glycogen molecules delivered to the cell from the hiker’s liver by insulin from the hiker’s pancreas. ...

Budget for Success on the Appalachian Trail

People need to know how much it’s going to cost to successfully plan a through hike.  This requires a budget.
People frequently ask “how much does hiking the Appalachian Trail cost?”
There is no one answer to this question.  People’s monthly expenses are so varied, people’s tastes and personal needs have a big impact on how they spend on the trail.  Numbers we see frequently at $1,000/month or $2-3/mile.  But one of the biggest reasons people get off the trail is that they run out of funds.   ...

The Trails That Led Me Here: Part I

Over the summer, I spent almost every day off from work in the White Mountain National Forest. I was waiting for a hiking partner to want to go with me for about a month before I decided to solo hike. The fact that I had hiked in the past, grew up in Maine and wasn’t a complete idiot were the things I told myself prior to going. It was a spur of the moment decision. I decided 12 hours before driving two hours into the mountains that I was going to drive two hours into the mountains. ...

My Nemesis: Gravity

I fall. A lot.
I fall so much the sensation is no longer unsettling; I’m familiar with the unnatural stretching of time accompanied by the extreme slow-motion “ohhhh nooooo, not again” in my mind.
I fell twice last Monday. First thing in the morning, I stepped outside my house and immediately fell, hitting my back hard on a cement planter to the left of the door. That evening I leaned back on my office chair and the bottom came loose, ...

Committing to Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail

I remember purposefully not hiking any part of the approach trail because I told myself, "I'm going to thru hike the Appalachian Trail(AT) one day and I want that time to be my first time." Now, a year later I am at the cross roads, do I commit to thru hiking the Appalachian Trail?

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but fear will never stop me.

I start hiking in 100 days.
The days seem to be slipping away and soon enough I will wake up and it will be March 22nd. I’ve mostly feel excitement about my thru-hike but, without a full-time job and with my gear research complete I have so much free- time that the fear has started to creep in. I have decided to face my fears head on and write them down so I can work on addressing them one at a time and rationalize them away. ...

Gear Lessons From a Hiker Who Never Learned Her Lesson

“The next time we’re in town, you’re getting a shakedown.”
My concerned/exasperated hiking companions said this to me countless times throughout the spring and summer of 2017. At its heaviest, my pack would top out at around 42 lbs with a full re-supply. At its lightest, I would estimate that my pack’s weight came in somewhere in the high 20’s. On average, I probably carried between 34 and 38 lbs. It was too much for me. ...

Preparing for a Thru-Hike: Plan or Plan to Adapt?

The biggest difference between our preparation for the Appalachian Trail vs. the Pacific Crest Trail is the amount of planning. Before the A.T. I had planned out our daily mileage & each of our town visits. Within the first 3 days, our plan went down the drain. Unexpected blisters put us back a day, hitchhiking took longer than I thought, & that first hostel roped me in. We learned that we had to adapt & let go of our plan. ...

PCT 2018: Cold Weather Gear Test (Suburban Style)

Cold Weather Challenge
We have been fortunate to have some cold and clear weather here in Seattle, and we thought it would be a great opportunity to test out some of our cold weather gear.  The plan was simple: camp in the backyard as closely simulating camping in the Sierra as possible. We wore items we expected to have during our hike and made a deal to commit to staying outside.  No bailing, no calling it because we are cold or couldn’t sleep, ...

Saying Goodbye to the AT (For now!)

Hello Trekkies!
(I feel like I could call you guys that now, haha).
Anyway last Saturday I stepped off the Appalachian Trail at mile 309 and started walking towards a town called Erwin, via a state highway. The hostel I’d intended to stay at that night was closed for the season, so I was left without a place to stay or a ride. My best option was to start walking down the road towards Erwin. So I did. ...

Hiding in the Woods

In my first Trek post, I included among my list of reasons to hike:
“I am terrified of the world right now and want to escape from it.”
“I am terrified of the world right now and want to gain strength to face it.”
I think it’s time for me to choose one.

Going Minimal: Preparing for the End

I love having only the bare essentials.
One of the aspects of hiking I most enjoy, and am greatly looking forward to, is the minimalism. I love having only the bare essentials. There is something incredibly freeing about being able to pick up and go anywhere knowing that you have everything you need to face life. Shelter, clothes, food, warmth, all contained in a pack on your back. It’s something that is truly beautiful to me. ...

What is a Thru-Hike?

For all the years I fantasized about one day hiking the trail, there was only one way. In my mind, thru hiking has always been starting at Springer Mountain and heading north, one foot in front of the other, all the way to Maine.

Things have gotten a bit more complicated as I explore the many thru hiking options. Now I wonder, where should I start?

Chasing the Dream on the AT in 2018

Franconia Ridge, New Hampshire is one of my most favorite places in the United States.  The first time I saw this I actually cried.  I am so amazed that there are places like this that I am able to walk on.  Even more amazing is that I get to fulfill a life-long dream and hike it all over again.
Who am I?

So,  imagine if you will,  that you’ve decided to thru hike the Appalachian Trail.   The lead up was amazing: reading stories and experiences on Facebook, procuring top-of-the-line gear,  telling your boss to ‘take this job and shove it’,   ...

AT 10: Rocksylvania Isn’t So Rocky After All

Don’t forget to check the end of this update for spectacular photos and another compilation video!
Rocksylvania
What can I say. The entire time I have been on the Appalachian Trail, a little over 8 months at this point in time, I have feared the moment I would enter Pennsylvania. The stories I read and tales I heard all pointed to one “truth.” That Pennsylvania was a rocky nightmare. Especially, the area between Delaware Water Gap and Port Clinton. ...

So, you’ve decided to thru-hike a long-distance trail. Fantastic idea! Have you put any thought into what you’re going to eat for all those miles? The first decision you need to make is your resupply strategy: are you going to shop as you go, mail packages along the trail, have someone at home send them to you, or a combination?
During my 2017 PCT thru-hike I did a combination of shopping in towns along the way, ...

Oh, social media
Social media and I have a love/hate relationship. I literally joined Facebook and Instagram THIS year. Let that sink in. I went over 30 years without having an online social media presence. Lessons Learned Alone in the Grand Canyon

As a child, I had a picture book chronicling the adventures of Donald Duck and his three nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, on a camping trip in the woods.  The details have gotten fuzzy in the 25 years since I last read it, but I remember the important points: Uncle Donald takes the ducklings backpacking along a river, where they set up camp.  Donald choses to camp in a sandy spot on the river’s bank, while his nephews opt to pitch their pup tent on higher ground.  ...
