And then there was 500 miles left
CT closing thoughts
I am not sure if it was the super humid weather or the fact that I had to spend two days in the hospital but Connecticut did not make my short list of favorite states Ive had the pleasure of hiking through on the AT. I’m sure the weather and unexpected hospital may have been a test but on the bright side it made me slow down a little which has helped me relish the experience a little more as the miles go down further and further. ...

Ricoh British Women’s Open Winners And History
The Women’s British Open was established in 1976 by the Ladies Golf Union, the governing body for women’s and girls’ amateur golf in Great Britain and Ireland. The event was intended to be the equivalent of the Open Championship but it was initially difficult to gain acceptance. Of the courses considered most prestigious in the Open Championship rota, Royal Birkdale was the only one to step forward.
The tournament’s difficulties continued to the point where it was forced to skip 1983. When it returned, it was to relatively unknown courses such as the Woburn Golf and Country Club, where it resided for ten years.
During the period from 1976 to 1993, the tournament was sanctioned only by the Ladies European Tour, with the exception of the 1984 edition, which was cosanctioned by the LPGA.
The LPGA’s sanction of the tournament in 1994 served to increase both in terest in the tournament and the quality of the field. Four years later, the event was held at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. It has since been held at Carnoustie, Royal Liverpool and St. Andrews—all courses which have hosted the Open Championship. The organizers of the Women’s British Open, however, have opted not to follow the lead of the Open Championship and limit the tournament to just the classic links courses.
In 2001, the LPGA granted the British Women’s Open Major status, replacing the du Maurier Classic.

The End of a Tramily
Feeling rushed and having regrets.
I broke up with my trail family (tramily) today.
I’ve been feeling rushed lately.
And I’m starting to have regrets.
Regrets about not taking more time at lunch to enjoy the view and the sun and the stillness.
Regrets about not taking the time to swim at Nuclear Lake or to sketch at Sages Ravine.
Regrets about not spending another half hour in Salisbury. Or Kent. Or hanging out with Blue Deer while he was chilling’ on a bench in front of the ice cream store. ...

Sorry, Yogi, not today!
It’s just Day Two of my projected 90 on the trail. I’m walking alone in a forested area with many bushes. Hubby is a minute or so ahead of me. Suddenly I hear lots of crashing about in the bushes just 15 yards to my left. I turn and see a very large dark blob through the leaves.
I think to myself, “Could it be?” Yes, it could. The good-sized bear turns and heads towards me. ...

Halfway Home
Day 81-86: Harper’s Ferry to Duncannon, 123.5 miles
Family Time
For the first time since I’d started the trail, I got to see some people from home. My grandparents drove up on their way from Florida to Massachusetts to visit me in Harpers Ferry. They treated me to meals, and my very own hotel room. Not a hostel, a hotel. With two enormous beds, and pillows that were like clouds. I found myself googling how to use both beds in a hotel room. ...

Beast Mode: walking because we can.
Quick note: wifi and service is getting increasingly hard to find so I will do my best with photos and continung this blog. But…might just be a lot of words.
Welp. The last of the major snow-walking is over. I think. Sure seems that way. Which means a beautiful, wonderful, brown, easy-to-see, dirt trail. Oh the luxury! It means dry feet and legs blackened with dirt. It means we can walk without thinking about the placement of every step and even look up on occasion to see our surroundings. ...

The AMC Huts: How do They Actually Work?
The Huts. The Huts. Everyone knows and talks about “The Huts.” You read about them during your pre-trail research and you hear about them every time someone talks about the White Mountains in New Hampshire, but it can be hard to understand what they actually entail until you’ve seen them yourself.
The Huts—also known as the High Huts of the White Mountains—are a series of eight mountain huts maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). They are located about six to eight miles apart along the Appalachian Trail (AT) and are available for overnight stays or daytime drop ins. ...

576 Summits: Gridding New Hampshire’s 4,000-Footers
ew Hampshire’s White Mountains are home some of the most challenging and beautiful trails in the country. The trails are often little more than eroded rockslides, navigated by boulder hopping and lowering one’s self off beleaguered tree trunks. And that’s just in summer. Thanks to the intersection of several storm tracks over bald summits, New Hampshire’s peaks are home to some of the worst winter weather in the world. And people can’t get enough.
There are 48 mountains in New Hampshire rising 4,000 feet and above. ...

WGC Bridgestone Winners and History
The WGC Bridgestone Invitational began life in 1962 as a four-man invitational tournament held at the Firestone Country Club. The field expanded, and by 1976, it was an official PGA Tour event known as the World Series of Golf. Thanks to the strength of field, it was considered just a step below the Majors, with a victory granting a 10-year exemption on Tour. The field at that time consisted of tournament winners from the various international tours.
NEC sponsored the event from 1984 to 2006, when it was taken over by Bridgestone.
Since it became known as the WGC Invitational (either as WGC-NEC or WGC Bridgestone) in 1999, Tiger Woods has owned the event, winning seven times.
The current field is composed of 75 players, who fit the following criteria:
Playing members of the last named United States and International Presidents Cup teams.
Playing members of the last named United States and European Ryder Cup teams.
Players ranked among the top 50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (one week and two weeks prior to event).
Tournament winners of worldwide events since the prior year’s tournament with an Official World Golf Ranking Strength of Field Rating of 115 points or more.
The winner of one selected tournament from each of the following tours: PGA Tour of Australasia, Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.
As of 2013, Tiger Woods has won the WGC Bridgestone eight times in the fifteen times it has been staged.

Let’s get something out of the way. I’ve been asked many times, most recently by some tourists at Crater Lake and the man who gave me a ride back to the trail, whether I’m afraid, as a woman, to be hiking this trail alone. The answer to this is simple and rings clear as a bell:

That’s a lot of consecutive days of hiking and my feet are grateful. Yet, when I met a hiker yesterday named Stogie, and he told me he’d just had his first zero since Damascus, Virginia (1000+ miles), I somehow felt like he won.
Everything turns into a competition out here (if you let it). ...

Wilderness of Despair – A Summit of Hope
The first time I felt a desire to quit my hike was on the climb up Chairback Mountain.
I already hiked most of the distance, and I was sitting about a tenth of a mile from the top of the mountain. From there begins a rock climb to the summit. At this point, you cease hiking and begin rock climbing. I stood there staring up at the rocks and I felt this rolling wave of depression and exhaustion. ...

Sun Therape ProSport Suntan Lotion Review
Sun Therape ProSport Suntan Lotion Review
Sun Therape ProSport Suntan Lotion
Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: One of the rare suntan lotions that does not cause a bad reaction on my skin.
While I fully understand that everyone needs to wear sunscreen, I have been hard pressed to find brands that do not cause a painful reaction on my face. The application of sunscreen leaves my face more read and feeling burned than if go without and just wear one of my wide brimmed hats. That’s not ideal in any sense. Fortunately, my arms and legs — for whatever reason — do not react in the same way, so I can use a regular sunscreen there.
Sun Therape ProSport is a brand that does better than most for my sensitive skin. After wearing it daily on rounds of golf and on the beach in South Carolina, I managed to avoid both a sunburn and suntan lotion-induced reactions.
The lotion is not at all greasy or sticky and feels quite dry on the skin. It has a bit of a soapy smell, but is otherwise inoffensive.
Manufacturer Pharmagel ProSport says that the product offers both sun protection from UVB and UVA rays, as well as an “advanced anti-aging, daily protective moisturizer.” The SPF rating is 35, and they recommend that you reapply every two hours.
Sun Therape ProSport suntan lotion seems to me to be on the expensive side at $20 for a 4.25 ounce. But if skin care is a priority, this just might be worth it.

Williams, Mountaineer Golf Honored by GCAA
Williams, Mountaineer Golf Honored by GCAA
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 26, 2017) – West Virginia University golf alum Chris Williams was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and the Mountaineers were named a 2017 All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America in July.
Williams was one of 260 Division I players to be named an All-America scholar for the 2016-17 season. To be eligible for the award, golfers must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds and finish with a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I. Golfers must also be of high moral character and in good standing with his college or university.
“I’m really proud of Chris for being named the first GCAA All-America Scholar in school history during his senior season,” coach Sean Covich said. “He set a great example of achieving success both on the golf course and in the classroom.”
A native of Scott Depot, West Virginia, Williams ranked third on the team last season with a 74.44 scoring average. He competed in 32 rounds over 11 events for West Virginia with a trio of top-10 finishes on the season. Williams, who was a two-time Big 12 All-Academic Team honoree, graduated in May with a degree in finance.
In addition, the Mountaineers earned 2017 All-Academic Team designation by the GCAA. To be eligible, programs must have a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
“The entire team did an outstanding job in the classroom and I am proud that the GCAA honored them with the All-Academic Team award,” Covich said. “Stephanie White, our academic advisor, really deserves a lot of credit. One of our goals every year is to achieve success in the classroom and these guys certainly accomplished that. I couldn’t be prouder.”

West Virginia / Maryland: Must See Day Hikes on the Appalachian Trail
With only 17.5 miles of the AT in West Virginia and 40 miles in Maryland, these two states are known for being the smallest on the trail. Their small size makes them great for sections hikers to knock out quickly, and perfect for thru hikers who want to take on the “4 State Challenge“.
Don’t pass through these sections of trail too quickly though – the trail in each of these states is well maintained, the shelters are beautiful, ...

I am “late”
Most of the information a person will come across regarding a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail is meant for a northbound hiker. The Trail Days of Damascus, Virginia occurs before any southbound hiker has even summited Katahdin; Hike Naked Day (summer solstice, ~June 21 which I was hoping to celebrate on the AT), falls when only 61% of registered SOBO hikers have begun their trek.* When I made the decision that it was a SOBO hike this year or I might not get on the trail, ...

6 Ways a Thru-Hike Is a Hero’s Journey
Maybe you don’t feel heroic out there, but make no mistake, a thru-hike is as epic an undertaking as any ancient tale. Joseph Campbell, the mythologist, argued that across cultures and times, there is only one story, told many ways. We relate to this story because it mirrors how we grow and change, whether physically, emotionally, or metaphorically: We are called to adventure, enter a strange realm, face and overcome trials, emerge transformed from an ordeal, ...

Fighting for Libraries
Great news was delivered on 7/20/2017! The House Appropriations Committee restored direct library funding language to its funding bill that provides flat (no increase/decrease) funding to libraries through their proposed budget. For those unaware, President Trump had removed ALL federal funding for libraries from his proposed budget and library supporters across the country have been fighting to have it restored in the House’s and Senate’s bills. We got the attention we needed in the House. This is a major hurdle we have passed. We still wait with bated breath for the Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations Committee to release its version of the proposed budget.
Tutor.com has taken an active role in the fight for libraries and will continue to do so moving forward. We do this for both business interests and personal ones. Knowing to whom we are speaking helps us determine which message to share. Back in February, Tutor.com hosted a webinar presented by John Chrastka of EveryLibrary to help librarians understand how to make a new funding ask. Mr. Chrastka spoke of focusing your message on the interests of your audience and we fully agree.
- Tutor.com continues to work with and support EveryLibrary in its efforts to fight for library funding across the country. We are not only a corporate donor, but we also continue to host webinars that help educate librarians about how to ask for funding, how to gain political support for libraries and how to win at the ballot box. These webinars serve the dual purpose of building awareness of EveryLibrary while providing important messaging for our library partners.
- com retains a government relations specialist to help advocate for library funding at the State government levels. Our message to state governors and legislators always centers around the specific education initiatives in that state by that administration, for example, highlighting how libraries help improve school performance and college/career readiness.
- Personal requests for support are made by both our full-time employees and our tutors. We provided our 3,000+ tutors with information and guidance on how to call or contact their Congressmen to share the message that libraries are important to both education and the economy (in terms of their jobs).
- At National Library Legislative Day, I attend as a parent, a library supporter and most of all, a constituent. As part of the Georgia delegation, I visit with Senators and Representatives from GA districts to tell them that as a voter, I look for candidates that support libraries because as a parent, I see the real benefits my children get from the local library. Next year, I plan to take even more of the library team to NLLD to represent their states and share their stories, too.
- Out of the current political climate and near-miss attempts to cut federal library funding came the need for a different message. In May, Tutor.com joined the Corporate Committee for Library Investment (CCLI). CCLI is made up of over 100 corporations that sell their products and services to libraries, thus depending on the existence and healthy funding of libraries to continue their businesses. The message to the Republican Congress was simple: cut library funding and you are hurting our businesses and putting thousands of jobs and tax dollars at risk. I am proud to sit on the steering committee for CCLI and look forward to playing an even more active role in helping to shape its future direction.
Tutor.com will continue to fight for libraries because we believe in libraries. We believe in equal access to resources and information. We believe in education and community. Please consider helping in the fight for libraries by staying informed and getting involved.

And Then There Were Two…
Along my thru-hike on the Colorado Trail last year, I was bored out of my wit. Around every couple miles or so, I would find myself talking to trees and praying that someone would cross my path just so I could wave and say hello. PCT Chapter 1: The Beginning
It’s impossible to recreate the magic of your first thru-hike.
Although the terrain is entirely unfamiliar, I went into the PCT feeling like I knew what to expect. For the most part, this premonition has been validated.
In other words, the initial butterflies have been much more mild and short-lived than they were on the AT; I feel like I’ve already hit my stride. This is both encouraging and disconcerting.
It’s encouraging because I feel like my backpacking mistakes are largely in the rear view mirror. ...

Odds To Win The 2017 PGA Championship
Odds To Win The 2017 PGA Championship As Of July 26.
Following his win at the Open Championship, it is no surprise that Jordan Spieth is atop the leaderboard of the odds to win the PGA Championship at 7/1. With three legs of the career slam under his belt, Spieth will be gunning for a win at the PGA. With it, he will join the list of the only five men who have won the career grand slam: Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.
Rory McIlroy is also at 7/1. But McIlroy, for all his immense talent, has not been in Major Championship form of late. However, he does have two wins at Quail Hollow, the site of this year’s PGA Championship. In 2015, his aggregate score of 21-under 267, beat the course record by five strokes.
World Number One Dustin Johnson is in at 9/1. He’s number two in the FedEx Cup rankings, but not in the top ten in scoring average.
Of the top three, I like McIlroy.
The next group comprises Jason Day at 16/1, and Hideki Matsuyama and John Rahm at 18/1. Lately, Day seems to me like a guy who lately can’t catch a break. Rahm has got to reign in his emotions to win a Major. Matsuyama, on the other hand, is an intriguing option. He’s third in the FedEx Cup and fifth in scoring average. Everyone seems to agree that he will be the first Japanese player to win a men’s Major. The PGA Championship seems to me to be a good place for that win.
Rounding out the top ten are Rickie Fowler at 20/1 and Henrik Stenson at 22/1. Fowler won at Quail Hollow in 2012, and currently sits just behind Jordan Spieth in scoring average. Stenson, on the other hand, has not had a lot of luck on the PGA TOUR this year. His ten starts resulted in four missed cuts and a withdrawal.
The complete odds to win the 2017 PGA Championship are below:
