Failure: Get Bitter or Get Better

img_9092

This is going to be a tough post for me to write, because there is something I have been very bitter about for a few months…I’ll explain. I cannot think of anything in the world I despise more than failure. While failing doesn’t feel good for anyone, there is something in me that especially hates ......

 Just What I Needed

I have always loved rainy days. There’s just something about the sound of raindrops hitting the windowpane that invites me to cuddle up with a hot beverage and a good book. If I wake up at a hostel and it’s raining there is a very likely chance that I will be staying there another night. ...

Is There Golf In Cuba?

It Is St. Andrew’s Day

Scotland FlagNovember 30 marks the feast day of Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, San Andres Island, Colombia and Saint Andrew, Barbados.

St. Andrew’s Day is also officially Scotland’s national day. In the home of golf, St. Andrew’s Day kicks off the Scottish winter festival season, and is celebrated with traditional food, music and dance, such as the ceilidh. The ceilidh is consists of couples dancing in circles, or sets — groups of groups of six or eight people.

Andrew was one of Jesus’ Apostles, and like his brother, Simon Peter, a fisherman. The Gospels of Matthew and Mark tell of the brothers’ call to become “fishers of men.” Andrew is not named in the Gospel of Luke, and in the Gospel of John, Andrew appears initially as a disciple of John the Baptist. In any case, Andrew is recorded as having been present at the miracle of the loaves and fishes, and at the Last Supper. Tradition says that he was martyred on an X-Shaped cross, known as a saltire. The saltire is now known as a St. Andrew’s Cross, and is the heraldry on the flag of Scotland.

The town of St. Andrews is named after Saint Andrew. In addition to being the home of golf, St. Andrews has been an important religious center since at least the 700s. The University of St. Andrews is the third oldest in the English speaking world.

Winter Golf Tees

Winter Golf Tees

These tees are one way that I extend my season in Michigan through the winter months. When the tee boxes get too frozen to try to spike a tee, I just get these out of the bag. They work passably well. You’ll get much better performance from a regular tee, but it’s winter. None of the equipment will perform as well, and all those extra layers will prevent a good swing anyway.

Mental Mondays: Play From The Correct Tees

TheFiveInchCoD22aR05aP01ZL-Pierce5a_mdmOne of the reasons scores are so high—and rounds so long—is that too many weekenders play from the wrong tees. Playing from the back tees might be manly, but often makes little sense. If you have to consistently make heroic drives to have a decent chance at greens in regulation, or if you find yourself playing long irons and woods into every par four, chances are the course is too long from those tees.

Forcing yourself to hit those extra yards causes more missed fairways. Drives that fall too far from the green force the use of long irons and fairway woods, resulting in missed greens in regulation, and pile up strokes with costly chips, flubbed flops and multiple shots out of greenside bunkers. Long shots into the green leave players far from the hole, requiring extra putts.

One rule of thumb is to play from the tees that give you a decent chance at using a mid or short iron on the par 4s. That requires that you have a realistic understanding of how far you hit your clubs.

If your typical driver shot is 220 yards, and your six iron goes 170, then on a par 4, you should play from the tees that are closest to 390 from the green.

Another way to assess the proper length is to use the Rule of 28, as described by Chris Mile, owner of the Miles of Golf pro shop in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Mile says that to find the proper tees, you should multiply your average driving distance by 28. That’ll give you the yardage that you should play from; choose the tees closest to that distance.

This means that a player who hits the ball 200 yards on a drive should play from the tees closest to 5,600 yards.

I use the 200 yard drive figure deliberately. Studies have consistently shown that the average golfer drives the ball 200 yards, but THINKS he hits it 30 yards further. And remember that it’s the AVERAGE that counts. Occasionally uncorking a 270 yarder is not the same as hitting for an average of 270. You also have to consider all the times you don’t hit it that far.

This tip is an excerpt from The Five Inch Course: Thinking Your Way To Better Golf. The complete book is available in Kindle and paperback format at Amazon.com.

Visiting the Golf Courses in Australia

australia-globe_z1r87fbo

People are going to have different objectives in mind when they are going to Australia. Some people are going to be interested in all of the unusual wildlife there, and Australia is certainly famous for all of that. Other people are going to want to see all of the landmarks that have made Australia famous over the years. Australia has a lot of cultural attractions which will vary in terms of their educational content. Still, the golf courses in Australia are going to be more than enough of a cultural attraction for a lot of people, and they’re going to go there. After winning a trip at the Royal Vegas Online Casino or a similar site, plenty of people are going to want to tailor the trip to their own expectations, which might include golf.

The golf courses of Australia are not going to be as famous as the golf courses of Scotland and places like that. However, many people in Australia really enjoy playing golf, and the finest golf courses in Australia can certainly compete with many of the great golf courses that people are going to find in a lot of other locations. Golf is actually one of the most popular sports in Australia, and this is going to have an effect on the number of golf courses that people are going to find in this general area. There are lots of different websites that will help people locate all of the most popular golf courses in Australia, as well as the golf courses that have the best reputations.

The Royal Vegas Online Casino can offer people lots of different prizes. Some people want to have large fortunes only. Other people are going to prefer to have large fortunes not for their own sake, but for the sake of visiting the world. These people might want to specifically choose the golf courses in Australia. Of course, they’re not going to be able to visit all of them during any sort of a short visit. The Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links is certainly a great course that people can visit. This is a golf course that is only around twelve years old, and yet it feels traditional in terms of its design.

The Kingston Heath Golf Club is another course that a lot of people would love and that really manages to show people the benefits of golfing in Australia. This is a club that has great conditioning all year, and so it doesn’t really matter when people visit the club and how they’re going to schedule their vacations. The Victoria Golf Club is definitely a great choice for the people who are interested in a broadly challenging course that is going to work for both the amateurs and the professionals. The Victoria Golf Club also has the advantage of being one of the most beautiful of the golf courses in Australia. This is truly a great country for the people who enjoy golf, and the golf courses in Australia will be famous to golf enthusiasts.

What is Hero Motocorp and Why Are They Sponsoring A Golf Tournament?

imageThe current sponsor of Tiger’s World Challenge Tournament is Hero Motocorp, an India-based motorcycle and scooter manufacturer. Tiger serves as their international brand ambassador.

Americans likely won’t be familiar with Hero, because as far as I can tell their bikes are not sold in the United States. Several articles said Hero was schedule to begin US sales in 2016, but my online search has failed to turn up any dealers.

For the curious, here’s the short story of Hero:

Hero dates to 1956, when it was started as Hero Cycles by two brothers, Dr. Brijmohan Lall Munjal and Pawan Munja. By 1975, it was the largest bicycle manufacturer in India. In 1983, the company signed a joint agreement with Honda of Japan, becoming Hero-Honda. That agreement ended in 2010, and the Hero Group has subsequently purchased Honda’s shares.

Hero Motocorp is currently the largest motorcycle and scooter manufacturer in the world.

Association with Tiger Woods is not Hero MotoCorp’s first excursion into golf. The company has been the sponsor of the Indian Open Golf Tournament since 2005. It also sponsors field hockey and cricket tournaments.

I do hope they open outlets in the US. I have long wanted to buy a scooter for short trips around town. I like this one from their catalogue:

North Face Overhead Wheeled Travel Pac

Grade: A
Teachers’ Comments: Very sturdy and roomy.

In my recent travels to Morocco, I was reminded of how much I like my North Face Overhead Wheeled travel pac. It’s more than a little pricey (although I got it on sale), but has held up incredibly well for quite a few trips. It holds a couple of day’s worth of clothes and toiletries, plus has space for various cables and chargers that I carry for my laptop, camera, etc. It fits perfectly as a piece of carry-on luggage.

3 Winter Window Treatments

When staged according to the season, window treatments can make a huge difference in how someone feels about a space. In this short post we’ll cover 3 window treatments that are well suited to the winter season.

Layered Curtains or Insulated Curtains
Use heavy fabrics or layered curtains over the windows to keep out drafts. Or, purchase insulated curtains with built-in thermal backing. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Block Out Blinds
They’re reasonably straightforward to fit as long as you are absolutely pinpoint accurate with the measurement for the vertical runners, as they must fit the window frame exactly. I managed with only a few expletives. They’re perfect at night as they block out light as well as draughts, but need to be opened during the day to let the winter sun in, so they are not effective during the hours of precious winter daylight. Source: TeleGraph

Shutters
Plantation Shutters can be considered the best value winter window treatments for their aesthetic appeal as well as their ability to increase the selling price on your home (in addition to keeping you warm!)
Plantation Shutters, especially those constructed of wood, have insulating elements and when closed the solid, durable structure of the slats will keep the cold air out of your windows during the winter and will shade your home from the scorching sun during the summer.
For those looking for a cheap, fast solution for your windows, Plantation Shutters are probably not the best choice. However, if you are looking to spice up the room with some elegance and desire a long-term solution that will add value to your home- then this is the option for you! Hero World Challenge Winners and History

imageThe Hero World Challenge is the current incarnation of Tiger Woods’ charity tournament, which was first held in 1999. In 2014, it features a field of 18, and is held at Isleworth, Florida.

The Tiger Woods Foundation was formed to create and support health, education, and welfare focused community organizations.

From 2000 to 2013, the tournament was held at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. For 2014, the tournament was moved to Isleworth in Florida, presumably to be closer to the homes of the pros enlisted to play.

From the beginning, the World Challenge has been a small-field event. Sixteen players teed it up in the 1999 event. The 2014 edition will feature eighteen players, consisting (pending availability) the most recent winners of the four major PGA tournaments, the top eleven available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, the defending champion, and two special exemption players selected by the Woods Foundation.

Hero Motocorp, the title sponsor, is an Indian motorcycle and scooter manufacturer. Past sponsor of the tournament include Target, Chevron and Northwestern Mutual.

The purse for the event is $3.5 million of which the winner receives $1 million.

A Video Montage of My 2016 Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike

AT video

The Appalachian Trail. Three words with five million steps. As I watch these short clips flash by, I have to force myself to see what really lies behind the screen. These memories, these experiences are all real. Every day I remind myself what really happened, that I really made it, that everything I see actually happened. I speak for many of the friends that I made out there when I say that looking back on an adventure such as the Appalachian Trail is hard to comprehend. The memories and bonds we made will forever be embedded in our minds....

Notice of Intent to Hike (or An Affirmation of Job-Leaving and Dream-Weaving)

The meadows surrounding Mt. Baldy in Northern Arizona are typical of the white mountain/blue range area.

I will be thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail southbound beginning in June 2017. This will necessitate leaving the education world (but I will return) and a life in Phoenix (but I will return to AZ). This is an explanation for context. I've come to realize the following: Don't isolate yourselves from humanity, but set yourself on a path within it. Hiking is humanity on a scale of what humanity has always done for ages....

Spiders, Snails, and the Appalachian Trail

I had the privilege of growing up long before it was socially acceptable to give a toddler an iPad. Sure, I had a Playstation (R.I.P. Spyro), but I spent most of my time outside playing Power Rangers (I always got to be Kimberly, duh) and building secret forts with other human children. Like, in person. Weird, I know. ......

Transportation Along the AT: The Section Hiker’s Dilemma

View of the Pawling NY Metro North Appalachian Trail station

I've section hiked more than 3/4 of the Appalachian Trail, stretching from Monson, ME down to Hot Springs, NC. Through section hiking, by necessity, I've become rather adept at patching together public transportation and shuttles to plan my trips (as well as bail partway through ill-fated hikes). I’m happy to share what I know and the resources I've used, as a springboard for future section hikers....

Anyone Miss The Skins Game?

imageThere’s no American golf event this Thanksgiving weekend. That wasn’t always the case, though. From 1982 to 2008, the Skins game was a staple of the holiday.

In its heyday, the Skins game attracted the biggest names in golf: Palmer, Player, Watson, Nicklaus, Strange, Couples and Woods. The last playing was in 2008 at Indian Wells Resort in the Santa Rosa mountains of Southern California.

The Skins game involved four players in what essentially was a match play format. Each hole has a monetary value, and the low score on the hole takes the prize. If two or more are tied for the low score (players take a half), the money carries over to the next hole. If the final hole is halved, there’s a playoff.  Any player that didn’t half the hole in a playoff drops out of the competition.

Each of the first six holes was worth $25,000. The second six holes were worth $50,000. Nos. 13-17 were at $70,000, and the 18th hole, $200,000. The foursome played nine holes for $300,000 on Saturday and nine for $700,000 on Sunday.

A variation of the format was used in 2001, when the player winning a hole had to halve or win the next hole to collect his skins from the previous hole. Only one player—Greg Norman—managed to pull it off.  Norman won the 17th and tied for low on the 18th to collect $800,000, the largest skin collected for one hole. He won the $200,000 in a playoff to win the entire $1 million dollar prize money.

Fred Couples has been called “Mr. Skins” because of his dominance in the Skins Game. He has won $3,515,000 and 77 skins in 11 appearances. He won five of the Skins Games overall. He’s also known as the King of the Silly Season.

Annika Sorenstam is the only female player to participate in the Skins Game.

If nothing else, the Skins game offered viewers television visions of warm climes and wonderful scenery.

The list of past winners is below:

2008 KJ Choi $415,000
2007 Stephen Ames $675,000
