Shriners Hospitals For Children Open Winners and History
The Shriners Hospitals For Children Open began life in 1983 as the Las Vegas Pro Celebrity Classic, when it was noted for the largest purse on TOUR and the assistance of Vegas showgirls in presenting the trophy. Tiger Woods won his first PGA TOUR event there in 1996. The Tournament also was the first to offer a purse of more than $1 million.
Through the years, the Shriners Open has operated under nine different names, including the Las Vegas Invitational, The Invensys Classic, The Michelin Championship, the Frys.Com Open and the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital For Children Open.
Timberlake was the tournament’s host from 2008 to 2012. He participated in the pro-am and also held a benefit concert during tournament week.
The Shriners Open is played at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
Throughout most of the tournament’s history, the event was played over five rounds at a variety of courses, including the TPC at the Canyons (now TPC Las Vegas), Bear’s Best Golf Club, Southern Highlands Golf Club, Desert Inn Country Club (now the Wynn Golf & Country Club), Las Vegas Country Club, Las Vegas Hilton Country Club (now Las Vegas National Golf Club), Sunrise Golf Club, Spanish Trail Golf & Country Club, Showboat Country Club (now Wildhorse Golf Club), Dunes Country Club and Stallion Mountain Golf Club.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 hospitals offering pediatric care. It specializes in orthopedic, burn and spinal cord rehabilitation. I can’t imagine a better charity.

What Is The Definition of Par In Golf?
Par is the term for the number of strokes that an accomplished golfer should require to complete any particular hole. Pars for each hole can range from three to six (yes, six).
Par also refers to the total number of strokes that same accomplished golfer should require to complete the course. Par for the course is the sum of the pars on the individual holes.
On every hole, two of the stokes are reserved for putts; the remainder is the number of strokes allocated for reaching the green “in regulation.” On a par five therefore, a good player is expected to travel from tee to green in three shots, and putt twice to finish. With a par four, it is two shots from tee to green and two putts.
Par varies according to the yardage on each hole. Hole layout and the difficulty of obstacles also are taken into consideration. Distance and difficulty determine “effective playing length.”
The USGA currently uses the following guidelines for yardages for par:
Par | Men's Yardage | Women's Yardage |
---|---|---|
3 | Up to 250 | Up to 210 |
4 | 251 - 470 | 211 - 400 |
5 | 471 - 690 | 401 - 590 |
6 | 691+ | 591+ |
Distances for par have changed somewhat over the years. When par was first standardized in 1911, a par three was up to 225 yards, and a par four set at no more than 425.
By 1917, par threes were up to 250, and a par four, 445 yards. Par fives more no more than 600 yards.
In 1961, par threes were still 250 yards and under. Par fours were up to 470 yards. Par fives were anything over 471, with no par sixes.
Par originally was a financial term. It can refer to the face value of a bond or the initial value of a stock. The term came into use in golf as the result of an 1870 article in the British magazine Golf. For the article, Alexander Doleman asked Davie Strath and Jamie Anderson what they thought would be the winning score at that year’s British Open at Prestwick. The two said that they thought a perfect score on the twelve hole course would be a forty nine.
Forty nine was said by Doleman to be “par” for the course, and in the 36-hole tournament, Young Tom Morris shot two over.
Alexander (A.H.) Doleman (1836-1914) was one of four brothers from Musselburgh who impacted the early game of golf. Alexander was elected Captain of Lytham and St. Annes in 1888, just two years after the club’s founding. He is credited with development of the club.
William Doleman (1838 – 1918) was the first amateur to enter the Open Championship. In 1854, as a sixteen-year-old sailor, he played a game on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec city with clubs he had stowed away. William Doleman is thought to be the first to play golf in Canada.
John Doleman (1826-1918) brought the Nottinghamshire, while Frank Doleman (1848-1929) was a clubmaker at Bruntsfield Links.
What is the definition of Par in golf? is one of a series of articles for the golf beginner.

AT&T Byron Nelson Will Move In 2018
Following a 35 year run at the Fours Seasons Resort and Club Dallas in Irving, the AT&T Byron Nelson will move to the Trinity Forest Golf Club, just south of downtown Dallas. Trinity Forest is a Bill Coore-Ben Crenshaw design built on reclaimed land.
The tournament will play at the Four Seasons in 2017 and move to Trinity Forest in 2018. AT&T will remain the title sponsor, and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas will continue its charity work with the Momentus Institute.
Statement from Jon Drago, AT&T Byron Nelson Tournament Director
We are deeply grateful to Irving, its residents and the Four Seasons for an incredible 35-year partnership. Since moving the tournament to Las Colinas in 1983, it has raised nearly $150 million for Momentous Institute, the tournament’s nonprofit beneficiary. As a result, more than 100,000 lives in North Texas have been transformed. We will forever be proud of the great work we’ve done together and we will cherish the relationships we have made along the way. The 2017 tournament will be a celebration of our extraordinary partnership and one of our best tournaments yet.
Statement from Dirk Burghartz, Four Seasons General Manager and Regional Vice President
Over the last 30 years, we have been so honored to welcome the TOUR players, their families, spectators, media, sponsors and community partners into our Four Seasons family for tournament week. Year after year we were blessed to be a part of the amazing work of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and the Momentous Institute. Byron’s legacy will continue to live on at the Resort and we will always look back to the past with fond memories. We treasure the un-breakable bonds and relationships with our partners and we wish them all the best with the future of the tournament. And although the tournament is departing, rest assured that Four Seasons Resort will continue to provide an exceptional experience for its private members, guests and clients and remain focused on its core business, while maintaining their status as one of the premier resort destinations in Texas.
Statement from Mayor Beth Van Duyne, Mayor of the City of Irving
The AT&T Byron Nelson is and always has been a regional event. The tournament is bigger than any one city and benefits every community in North Texas. Irving has been honored to welcome the PGA TOUR for what will be the 35th tournament. Together, we raised $150 million that allowed the Salesmanship Club to help 100,000 children through its education and mental health programs designed to build and repair kids’ social emotional health. We thank the Four Seasons Resort and Club for delivering year after year a first-class experience for golfers, their families, media, sponsors and spectators. We wish the tournament well in its new location with the knowledge that money raised will continue to benefit important programs. Irving will continue to host the LPGA’s Volunteers of America Texas Shootout at the Las Colinas Country Club.
Statement from Peggy Nelson, wife of the late Byron Nelson
While Byron was humbled by the honor of having this tournament named for him, he was at the same time very proud that it would ultimately help so many precious children and hard-working families to succeed, both in school, at work, and in their future lives. We were both so graciously welcomed by everyone at the Four Seasons and the City of Irving’s staff, and we appreciated all the security and fire protection on hand to serve and protect, in particular Captain Rick Cutler, who watched over Byron for six wonderful years. Byron and I always looked forward to this highlight of our year as he welcomed the pros on the first tee and thanked them at the 18th green. While he especially enjoyed congratulating each year’s champion, he was forever mindful that the proceeds from the entire week would be put to the best possible use for the kids. And his respect for the Salesmanship Club’s dedication to this wonderful cause was unlimited. It’s going to be exciting to see all the golfers and spectators at the new venue as we continue to bless the children and families who are at the heart of this great golf championship.
Statement from Michelle Kinder, Executive Director of Momentous Institute
Every day, our team interacts with kids and families who are working hard to achieve their full potential – some in the face of enormous challenges. It is front of mind for us all the time that we could not do this sacred work without incredible partners. Without question, the City of Irving and the Four Seasons are at the top of that long list of partners we cherish. We simply could not be more grateful.
Statement from Maura Gast, Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director
After more than three decades working side-by-side to put on a first class event, we consider the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, Momentous Institute and Four Seasons Resort and Club as so much more than partners. While saying goodbye is never easy, we will continue our successful joint efforts to ensure the 2017 AT&T Byron Nelson is one of the most memorable in our 35-tournament history, while celebrating the legacy that is Byron Nelson himself. Byron will always hold a special place in the history of Irving.

Visiting Our Clients
This September, Tutor.com Client Services Manager, Jerin Jones hit the road with colleague Alicia Conley to visit clients in the great states of Texas and Oklahoma! Five days on the road gave Jerin the opportunity to get up close and personal with program teams to talk about student success, their unique Tutor.com programs, and what’s in store for the year ahead. With 6 client visits in Texas and a quick stop in Oklahoma, Jerin was able to chat with clients old and new.
First stop on the journey was Western Oklahoma State College. Located in Altus, Oklahoma, WOSC is one of Tutor.com’s longest standing clients in higher education. Greeted by the warm welcome of Student Support Services and Tutor.com program team, Jerin and the program team discussed goals for the 2016-2017 year and took some guesses on who would make it to the World Series.
Following the warm-up in Oklahoma, Jerin was ready to get down to Texas. Jerin met with two brand new program teams that joined the Tutor.com line-up in the summer of 2016: Weatherford College and North Central Texas College. Both programs are experiencing their first fall offering Tutor.com online tutoring. Visits with new programs centered on how best to leverage their programs in the first year, and navigating program management in general. With faculty engagement and involvement of the program teams, it is no surprise that both programs have really taken off this fall.
Next it was time to see a few of our Tutor.com program vets. Many of our Texas Schools have been partners for years, and these visits are a reunion of sorts. Jerin had a candid conversation about the quality of tutoring and writing support with the program team at Concordia University Texas, located on a beautiful tree-lined nature reserve. Next up, Jerin met with a couple of seasoned program teams that included a few new faces at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Navarro College. For both these visits, the topic du jour was strategies to incorporate Tutor.com into the comprehensive support services for all students. Conversations focused on the introduction of our diagnostic quizzes to programs and determining how Tutor.com could be incorporated in the students’ experience inside on-ground tutoring centers.
Rounding out the Texas travels, one of Jerin’s last stops was to Texas A&M University-Central Texas in Killeen. There Jerin and the team discussed some common themes Texas programs share with regards to their service. A discussion on how to bring those common themes into a larger audience arose: what would happen if we brought all of the Texas-based Tutor.com partners together to discuss in an open forum the successes and challenges of student success and student support? And as a result, Tutor.com is working with TAMUCT to organize our first ever state-wide client engagement event—scheduled for February 2017.
Getting on the road to see our clients is important to our Client Service Managers because they get the chance to meet face-to-face with the program teams that put in the day-to-day effort to ensure their programs are successful and their students are supported. The Tutor.com Client Services Team visits schools throughout the school year to host trainings and meet with leadership, students, and staff to get a more comprehensive view of what student success really looks like in action.
Interested in a visit? Email your Client Services Manager to see the next time they will be in your state!

3 Picture Window Decorating Tips
A picture window is a type of window with a single pane of glass which usually does not open. It doesn’t provide ventilation, but it is designed to provide a great outdoor view in the living room where it’s commonly placed. Know how to decorate this type of window by checking out the tips below!
Blinds
Because they were built into post-war homes, which were predominantly modern in style, blinds suit them particularly well. Depending on the width of the window and the look you want, you might want to use one large blind or multiple blinds side by side.
Cellular and Venetian blinds are typically easier to fit on these large windows than softer blinds like Roman shades. You can find blinds for them by searching for “large window blinds” in addition to “picture window blinds.” Source: DIYNetwork
Valances
To allow light in and still be able to showcase a great view, try a valance. When you measure for the height it will be, add more inches if you can to mount it closer to the ceiling so the windows look taller. Valances should cover any blinds or shades you may want to add underneath. You do not need to spend a lot on the blind or shade underneath your valance, because it won’t show when not in use. Source: Houzz
Framing Architecture
The physical structure of the window may also affect the window coverings you have room to mount. For example, a roller shade requires at least two inches of frame clearance for an inside-mounted system. Low-profile shades, such as pleated or honeycomb may need as little as one inch of clearance for mounting. Window-opening devices, such as handles and cranks, can also affect your available shade choices. If your picture window is a single pane of glass and is over eight feet wide, it may require a custom-made shade, further limiting your choices either through design or budget constraints. Custom-made fabric window shades, such as Roman shades, can be made for oversized windows. Source: SFGate

Quick review of tournament history:
- The WGC-HSBC Champions was created in November 2005 and became an official European Tour and Asian Tour event beginning in 2006. Event champions during that timeframe: 2005 – David Howell; 2006 – Y.E. Yang; 2007 – Phil Mickelson; 2008 – Sergio Garcia.
- In 2009, the WGC-HSBC Champions was granted World Golf Championships status but was an unofficial event on the PGA TOUR. Phil Mickelson’s win in 2009 is not considered an official PGA TOUR victory.
- Beginning in 2010, the HSBC Champions counted as an official PGA TOUR victory and offered a three-year exemption on the PGA TOUR—provided the tournament was won by a PGA TOUR member. Prize money, however, did not count toward the official PGA TOUR money list, even if a PGA TOUR member won the event. Tournament winners during this timeframe include: 2010 – Francesco Molinari (unofficial PGA TOUR win); 2011 – Martin Kaymer (unofficial PGA TOUR win); 2012 – Ian Poulter (official PGA TOUR win).
- On the final day of the 2012 event, HSBC announced renewal of its title sponsorship through 2015, along with the announcement that the event would become a part of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup schedule, awarding official money and FedExCup points (and a three-year exemption) beginning in 2013 with Dustin Johnson winning the 2013 event, Bubba Watson winning in 2014 and Russell Knox winning last year.
- The World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions is one in a series of four World Golf Championships events including the Mexico Championship (Mexico City, Mexico), the Dell Match Play (Austin, Texas) and the Bridgestone Invitational (Akron, Ohio). The four champions of the World Golf Championships in the 2015-2016 PGA TOUR season include Russell Knox (HSBC Champions), Dustin Johnson (Bridgestone Invitational), Jason Day (Dell Match Play) and Adam Scott (Mexico Championship).
A look back at the 2015 WGC-HSBC Champions
- Entering the final round of the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, Russell Knox held a share of the lead with Kevin Kisner at 16-under-par. The 30-year-old Scotsman carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday and posted 20-under 268, good for a two-stroke win over Kisner. Knox captured his first-career PGA TOUR victory in his 93rd start at the age of 30 years, 4 months 18 days and earned a three-year exemption on TOUR through the 2018-2019 season
- Knox became the second player to win a World Golf Championship in his debut. Aside from Jeff Maggert, who won the very first World Golf Championships at the 1999 Accenture Match Play Championship, no player had won a World Golf Championships in his first start in the series. He is also the first player from Scotland to win a World Golf Championships title.
- Knox was able to record his second victory of the year later in the season at the Travelers Championship in August. With his second win of the season, Knox joined Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy as the only multiple winners in 2015-16.
- Seven players have made a World Golf Championships event their first PGA TOUR win:
- Darren Clarke – 2000 Dell Match Play
- Craig Parry – 2002 Bridgestone Invitational
- Kevin Sutherland – 2002 Dell Match Play
- Henrik Stenson – 2007 Dell Match Play
- Ian Poulter – 2010 Dell Match Play
- Shane Lowry – 2015 Bridgestone Invitational
- Russell Knox – 2015 HSBC Champions
Player Updates For The WGC-HSBC Champions
- Rory McIlroy
- The 2016 FedExCup champion makes his 2016-2017 PGA TOUR season debut with hopes of continuing where he left off in late September.
- At the Deutsche Bank Championship, McIlroy found himself six strokes off the lead after 54 holes. He birdied six of his first 12 holes in the final round on Labor Day for his first PGA TOUR victory in more than a year after his last at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship
- The win helped him enter the TOUR Championship at No. 6 in the FedExCup standings, where he was a part of one of the most dramatic finishes to the season-ending event in recent memory. In a drama-filled final round, McIlroy holed out for eagle from 137 yards on No. 16 in to move to 11-under and one stroke behind leader Kevin Chappell. A victory meant McIlroy would take home the FedExCup, while a second-place finish put the FedExCup in Dustin Johnson’s hands. A final-hole birdie in regulation moved him to 12-under and forced a three-way playoff with Chappell and Ryan Moore. With Chappell bowing out of the playoff, Moore and McIlroy required a fourth extra hole, the 16th, where he had holed out earlier in the day. After Moore had saved par with a putt from 17 feet, McIlroy drilled his birdie putt from 15 feet to claim both the TOUR Championship and the FedExCup title for his 13th PGA TOUR win and his 22nd victory worldwide.
- The win puts McIlroy with the second-most wins (13, behind Tiger Woods 18) on the PGA TOUR since the start of the 2008 season.
- McIlroy has won two World Golf Championships in his career, winning the 2014 Bridgestone Invitational and the 2015 Dell Match Play.
- This is the sixth time that McIlroy has played the HSBC Champions having never finished worse than T11 with two fourth-place finishes.
- Dustin Johnson
- Dustin Johnson, winner of the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as the 2015-2016 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, returns to the PGA TOUR at an event where he won in 2013 with a final score of 24-under-par.
- Johnson, 32, fashioned a career-best three wins during the 2015-16 season at the U.S. Open, World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and BMW Championship. With his record-breaking victory at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club, Johnson took over the lead in the FedExCup and ultimately finished second to Rory McIlroy in the season-long competition.
- In 22 starts, Johnson had a TOUR-best 15 top-10 finishes with 21 made cuts. In addition to his three wins, he posted top-three finishes at the RBC Canadian Open (T2), Shell Houston Open (third) and the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide (third).
- Johnson also took home the Byron Nelson Award for Adjusted Scoring Average (69.172) and the Arnold Palmer Award as the TOUR’s leading money-winner ($9,365,185).
- Johnson has now won at least one PGA TOUR event in nine consecutive seasons, dating back to his rookie season in 2008, the longest active streak on TOUR.
- Johnson is a three-time World Golf Championships winner with victories at the HSBC Champions (2013), the Bridgestone Invitational (2016) and the Mexico Championship (2015)
- Bubba Watson
- At the 2015 HSBC Champions, Watson made an eagle with a dramatic shot from a greenside bunker to force a playoff with Tim Clark. On the first playoff hole, Watson found himself in the same bunker, but his blast to the green came up more than 20 feet short. Watson again seized the opportunity, making the putt for his first career victory in a World Golf Championships event and his seventh PGA TOUR victory at the time.
- This is Watson’s fifth appearance at the HSBC Champions in his career.
- Watson is making his 2016-17 season debut at the HSBC Champions.
- The nine-time PGA TOUR champion and two-time Masters winner advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs for the 10th consecutive season, one of 16 players to reach the FedExCup Playoffs every season since its inception. Watson reached the season finale at the TOUR Championship for the seventh time.
- In total, Watson’s 2015-16 season included nine top-25 finishes from 19 starts. Of those, two were top-five showings, coming in back-to-back starts with a win at the Genesis Open and runner-up finish at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship.
- Patrick Reed
- Patrick Reed came away from the Ryder Cup as one of the team’s top performers, in no small part thanks to his win in the first singles match of the final day against Rory McIlroy.
- The 25-year-old American already has five wins on the PGA TOUR and at least one victory in each of the last four seasons.
- After a win at the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs, Reed finished a career-best No. 3 in the 2015-2016 FedExCup standings.
- Reed is playing in his second HSBC Champions with his best finish, T7, coming in last year’s event
- Henrik Stenson
- Playing in the HSBC Champions for the sixth time in his career, 2016 Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson will look to win his second World Golf Championships victory (2007 Dell Match Play) and for the sixth time on the PGA TOUR.
- Stenson has 13 additional international victories, including the 2016 BWM International Open on the European Tour
- Li Hao Tong
- At the 2015 HSBC Champions, China’s Hao Tong Li got up and down for par from the front of the 72nd green to card a final-round even-par 72, posted 15-under-par 273 and finished in a tie for seventh with World No. 1 Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
- With his father serving as his caddie, Li became the first Chinese player to finish in the top 10 at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions since the tournament became an official World Golf Championships event in 2009. Xin-Jun Zhang previously recorded the best finish by a player from China in any World Golf Championships event with his T13 at the HSBC Champions in 2011
- His T7 performance in front of his home fans was the best showing in a PGA TOUR event by a Chinese player. It was the third time that Li has played in the HSBC Champions, the only tournament he has played on the PGA TOUR.
WGC-HSBC Champions Tournament notes:
- The field includes 10 major championship winners: Rory McIlroy (4), Martin Kaymer (2), Bubba Watson (2), Dustin Johnson (1), Louis Oosthuizen (1), Charl Schwartzel (1), Adam Scott (1), Henrik Stenson (1), Jimmy Walker (1) and Danny Willett (1).

Mental Golf Tip Mondays: Turn Off The Cell Phone
It’s a problem that only a modern golfer could have: being bombarded by messages from the outside world while playing a game that requires focus, peace of mind and calm.
This week’s mental golf tip is a simple one: Turn off the cell phone and leave it in your bag. Or better yet, leave it in your car.
A lot has been written about the impropriety of phones on the course, and of the danger of having one go off while you’re in the middle of a swing. But I don’t think that’s the primary problem. I think the primary evil of cell phones on the course lies in informational distraction. The mere presence of the things and their incoming messages takes your mind away from golf.
I’ve ignored my own advice far too often. I’ll forget to switch the phone to silent, and it will ding its new message notification. Then I begin wondering whether it’s junk email or important. Perhaps it’s a text message from my wife. Wondering distracts me from my game. So I check the message. Usually, it’s junk. But often enough, it’s something I need to attend to, so I begin thinking about that instead of the game. And by that point, I’m into a golfing death spiral.
This tip is an excerpt from The Five Inch Course: Thinking Your Way To Better Golf. The complete book is available in Kindle format at Amazon.com.

Scary Golf Holes: The 18th At Pierce Lake
The 18th at Pierce Lake is so scary that they’ve got a special plaque dedicated to it.
Notice that The GolfBlogger is one of the “experts” quoted. Jeff Daniels, a resident of nearby Chelsea, is also quoted. That’s probably the closest I’ll come to Hollywood royalty. I’d love to play a round with him, though.
The hole is 200 plus yards of carry over a swamp to an elevated green. A miss right is out of play. Miss left and you’ll have a side hill chip back to the green. You are highly unlikely to miss long on this hole.

Sanderson Farms Championship Winners and History
Sanderson Farms Championship Winners and History
The Sanderson Farms Championship, in one form or another, has been part of the PGA Tour schedule since 1968. Throughout most of the tournament’s history, it has served as an opposite field event for major tournaments.
Sanderson Farms is the current name sponsor. The event previously has been known as the True South Classic, Viking Classic, Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, Southern Farm Bureau Classic.
Originally played at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, the event moved in 1994 to Annandale Golf Club in Madison, which hosted through 2013.
Sponsor Sanderson Farms is one of the nation’s leading food corporations and is based in Mississippi, in Laurel. The tournament’s host organization, Century Club Charities, is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is promoting the game of golf for the benefit of charity. The Sanderson Farms Championship’s primary charity is Friends of Children’s Hospital, a 501(c)(3) benefitting the Blair E. Batson Hospital for children.
As the Magnolia State Classic and Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, the tournament was played opposite the Masters from 1969 to 1993. From 1994 to 1998, the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic was played opposite the Open Championship. It has also been scheduled opposite the Tour Championship and WGC American Express Championship as the Southern Farm Bureau Classic from 2000 to 2006. As the Viking Classic between 2007 and 2011, it was scheduled opposite the President’s Cup, Ryder Cup and Open Championship. For one year as the True South Classic (2012) it was held opposite the Open Championship.
The current Sanderson Farms Championship was opposite the Open Championship in 2013, and currently plays simultaneously with the WGC-HSBC Champions.
There was no tournament in 2014, due to the switch to the PGA TOUR’s new wraparound schedule.
The Sanderson Farms Championship has has been an official money event on the PGA Tour since 1994. Prior to that, it was a satellite event with the money counting but the wins counting as unofficial.
As an alternate event, the winner does not get an invitation to the Masters Tournament, but does earn a trip to the PGA Championship, a two-year PGA Tour exemption, a minimum of 24 OWGR points, and 300 FedEx Cup points.
Among the tournament winners are Craig Stadler, Payne Stewart and Fred Funk.

Practice, Passion, Persistence
Have you seen that commercial that says, “What if you could prevent cancer by eating just one piece of broccoli? What if you could lose weight by doing one sit up?”? In the education world, we could substitute, “What if you could be a good writer by writing just one essay? What if you could conquer calculus by completing just one problem?” Wishful thinking? I think you know the answer to that question.
What has this got to do with learning? Learning involves meaningful practice. The word “practice”, however, often carries with it a somewhat dour connotation of tedium. It brings back memories of hours spent laboring over worksheets or stretching fingers over piano keys often to very little success. Part of the problem is that practice is frequently confused with rote repetition. Practice does not necessarily mean rote repetition but rather regular, purpose-driven use, as the definition states practice involves application of an idea.
The Elements of Practice
But “practice” isn’t as simple as it sounds! Applying ideas, especially those we do not quite understand can be highly frustrating. There are a number of elements which contribute to successful practice. Practice must involve focused concentration. Half-hearted practice rarely if ever produces the desired results. Practice requires persistence. One could hardly imagine achieving the level of a prodigy after only one or two lessons. In order to be focused, persistent, and effective, practice must involve some element of passion, some desire to learn. And finally practice does not make perfect if one is practicing incorrectly. Effective practice requires monitoring and feedback. Who knew practice could be so complicated?
Passion:
We cannot all be passionate about all things but we do need to be motivated to truly learn. How can instructors encourage students who may not have a natural interest in or desire to learn a concept, achieve mastery? Last month’s blog mentioned the importance of a growth mindset. Relevance is also a factor. The more a learner can internalize a reason to learn a concept, the more relevant it becomes and the more willing he or she is to commit to achieving mastery. Relevance comes in many shapes and sizes.” It meets an immediate need. “I have to earn money.” “I need to be able to drive to a workplace. I will learn to drive. Or it is a stepping stone to achieving a larger goal. “Christine is going to make it through chemistry because she has a goal of becoming a doctor and learning chemistry is a necessary step to help her achieve her goal”. Or it will bring some sort of intrinsic reward. Educators and parents need to persist in finding ways to help students attach relevance to what they are learning.
Focus:
Once motivation has been addressed, focus comes more easily. Focused concentration on the task is essential to achieving mastery and can be enhanced by creating a structure within which to practice. Time limits, breaks, specific locations free from distraction, study partners, whatever works for the learner to create an environment conducive to promoting his or her ability to focus on the topic or skill.
Persistence:
Although we are all used to functioning in a world of instant communication, learning is not fast. It is a sustained process. K. Anders Ericsson calls this Deliberate Practice – “focusing on something you cannot do. It entails considerable, specific, and sustained efforts to do something you can’t do well—or even at all.” (Harvard Business School Review (a., 2007)). Without a growth mindset and passion, persistence is a challenge. If pounds or inches are not dropping off, regular visits to the gym get harder. Experiencing positive results and praise, breaking larger goals into smaller ones and the existence of an on-going support system all will help students to persist.
Absent active use of new concepts and skills, we cannot achieve deeper learning. We are left to the vagaries of good or bad memories. Each time our students write, question, draw conclusions, apply and evaluate information in a variety of real world scenarios and to previous learning experiences, they are practicing. When they do so repetitively and with feedback and input from experts, they achieve that mastery which is the goal of all educational experiences. Without meaningful practice, learning is doomed to the netherworld of “the things I have forgotten from college.”
