Welcome Autumn with an Interior Update

Just as you change the types of clothing you wear every season, it’s also best to change up your interiors. You don’t need to make drastic alterations; adding one thing or two pieces, or just changing some pieces is certainly enough to change the ambiance of a room. Let the changing of leaves and crisp breeze inspire you to do some of the tips below:

Autumn Textures
Growing accustomed to the new season comes easy with warm cushion covers and sofa blankets. Get your indoors feeling new by updating your curtains, carpets and bed sheets with an autumn colour palette.
Choose curtain colours that showcase nature by drawing on shades of gold, burnt orange, rich browns and creamy tones. Neutrals colours and splashes of yellow can also contribute some autumn charm to your home.
Keep in mind that although it precedes winter, the autumn months have a different decorative element to winter. Remember to:
Avoid thick curtains and bed sheets that will overwhelm your interior space.
Opt for soft rugs and patterned throw cushions that will accentuate the autumn colours. Source: OneFlare

Bowls of Seasonal Fruits
A trip to the grocery store is all it takes. Load your cart up with fresh apples, pears, berries and nuts and you will have a healthy and environmentally pleasing display. Other ideas are to bring the outdoors inside. Bundle sticks and branches together and place them by the fireplace or in vases and jars.  Pine cones of all shapes and sizes can look quite lovely in large glass or ceramic bowls. Autumn decor shouldn’t have to cost too much. Source: Freshome

Candles
Der! We all know candles look great any time of year but they really come into their own and create a lovely glow when the nights are drawing in. Think more wintery, spicier fragrances rather than zesty summer scents. Source: TheInteriorsAddict

The Right Mindset for Success

How do you define success? Failure? Success can be seen as doing your best in learning and improving, or it can be viewed as winning because you are talented. Failure can be seen as a setback that is motivating, a wake-up call or it can be something that causes you to doubt your natural talent (Dweck, 2008).pen-idea-bulb-paper

Your choice of definition provides valuable insight into your mindset, another buzz word that is infiltrating educational institutions. It’s a complex phenomenon involving one’s attitude, behaviors, and strategies necessary for success. One’s mindset is not easily observable and often not considered as a root cause when a student acts out, fails, or even drops out. A certain mindset is related to each of these behaviors, and the good news is that it can be changed. However, identifying a generalized solution for whole institutions or even classrooms to address mindset is challenging because each student brings different experiences and perception into their learning. So how do you determine a student’s mindset?

Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has published extensively on this topic.  A simplified way to think about it is that we human beings tend to have either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. If you or your students have ever made a statement such as:  I cannot learn foreign languages.  I’m bad at math and so are my parents.- then you have encountered a “fixed mindset.” A fixed mindset can impede learning and even lead to some of the obstructive behaviors mentioned earlier. Statements such as: “I don’t understand this yet, but I am going to keep at this until I figure it out” is an indicator of a “growth mindset.” A growth mindset propels learning and advances in ability resulting in confident, persistent, and motivated learners. So how is mindset related to these other factors of student performance?

The University of Chicago’s Consortium on Chicago School Research created a model of mindset and other “non-cognitive” factors involved in academic performance. Their model demonstrates the relationship among persistence, mindset, learning strategies, social skills, and academic behaviors. Mindset works through persistence and learning strategies, so you are not likely to see improvement with homework unless the student believes s/he can succeed and that effort leads to growth. Only then will s/he want to persist through challenging tasks which can lead to improved behaviors related to homework and attendance (Farrington, Roderick, Allensworth, Nagaoka, Keyes, Johnson, & Beechum, 2012). If a student is not attending school or fails to complete homework, it may be best to address his/her mindset first. But remember mindset emerges differently among learners and is highly context dependent, so it is important to know the individual and the context of the academic content, school community, and instruction. Not an easy task, but worth pursuing.

So what exactly can you do to build a growth mindset? Here are a few strategies used at Tutor.com to build student confidence and mindset over the short period of time in an online environment.

  • Focus on the process of learning, not the final outcomes (i.e., correct answer or grades)
  • Celebrate a quick win early, not just the correct answer at the end, to build a sense of success
  • Break down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks
  • Emphasize that the brain is like a muscle and it needs to exercise and be challenged in order to grow

Mindset is critical to success. You know you have reached the ultimate goal of the right mindset when you love mistakes and challenges as much as success. When you seek out and value feedback. When you thrive on the learning and enjoy the process of improvement. To help you reach this goal, in a future article we will dive into the types of growth mindset providing more insight into how to recognize fixed versus growth mindset, enhancing your ability to deliver a more personalized learning experience.

3 Tips for Fitting a Roller Blind

Putting roller blinds on your windows is a quick and affordable way to give any room privacy and shade.  Here are some tips on fitting a roller blind, including: measuring the width, installing the brackets and adjusting the blinds.

Below are 3 tips on fitting a roller blind:

Measuring the Width
If you want to hang the blind inside the window frame, measure the width of the blind including the mounting brackets. Allow 5 mm extra space at each side of the frame so you can fit the brackets easily.
Decide whether you want to fit the chain of the roller blind on the left or right side. After marking out the position, fix the brackets inside or onto the window frame. The bracket with a protruding pin, hex-head fitting or groove is usually the side with the chain mechanism. Check first if this is the case, as it can differ from one brand to another. Source: DIY4Beginners

Installing the Brackets
So let’s get started. Firstly, offer up the blind to the window – it’s very important you fit the brackets as accurately as possible to ensure a snug fit.
You will have already decided whether to fit your blinds to the inside or outside of the window recess.
To fit outside the recess, position your brackets here
To fit inside the recess, you can choose whether to top fix into the lintel or face fix into your window frame.
To top fix, position your brackets here (recommended for uPVC windows). Make sure you allow enough clearance for any objects that could obstruct the blind, like window handles. Do this by measuring how far the handle sticks out, and make the same allowance when fitting your brackets.
To face fix position your brackets here (recommended for wooden window frames).
Fit the brackets into each end of your blind. Now position your blind at your window, using the brackets to mark where the holes should go. Don’t forget to position your blind correctly, depending on whether you are top fixing or face fixing your blind!
Now drill or screw into position, using rawl plugs where necessary. Source: Web-Blinds

Adjusting the Blinds
If you’re lucky, the blind will fit exactly. If the blind you have purchased is too long or wide, you can cut the roller and the blind to fit.

  • Measure the distance between the brackets, then deduct the amount stated on the instructions supplied.
  • Unroll the blind. Mark and cut the roller and the lath (the strip of wood or metal at the bottom) using a hacksaw.
  • Mark and cut the blind with sharp scissors.
  • Push the end plug and side control into the ends of the roller (making sure they are on the correct sides), then slot the blind into the brackets.
  • Finish up. Slide the blind into place on the brackets. Check that it is sitting straight and that the length is good. Pull the blind up and down to check that the cord or other mechanism is working properly. Tidy up any loose ends, such as a cord that is dangling down too low (these can usually be adjusted using the little snaps that are already fitted on them). Source: wikiHow

What’s New For Titleist?

Titleist will release its 917 Drivers and Fairway toward the end of October. As always, their designs are beautiful and classic. When I first started playing, the two brands I aspired to play were Titleist and Mizuno. One day, I thought, when I am “good enough,” I’ll get a set. Still have never had a... Read more »

A Glimpse Into The Mind Of A Future Thru-hiker

11225157_1719734148249639_3174153391466005701_n

I have always been amazed by the cultural melting pot of people that are drawn to the AT. There is nothing that I love more than meeting all the new and interesting people, all from different walks of life. Despite all of our materialistic differences, we are all drawn by the same mysterious force, “The ......

10 Week Sabbatical  I guess it was a sabbatical. I broke my foot at the end of June and I have been off the trail for 10 weeks. Though I’ve been back to work. However, I had the chance to go back to the trail and so I took it.  I returned back to John ......

Welcome Friends!

10 years ago I thought I worked at a school that had a transient population. Now, I just think that all of society is a transient population with ever-changing jobs, interests, and life.  It is common for kids to attend 2 or 3 schools, just in elementary school! At my current school, new students pour in all year long even up to the last weeks of school when we are taking End of Grade tests. I have become accustomed to welcoming all students, including new students, during my Introduction to the School Counselor lessons. I also like to spend at least one lunch period with all new students in my grade levels, second grade and up, in a New Student Group.
In previous years, we have played New Student Bingo as a "getting to know you" activity and then we discuss how new students are transitioning to the school, emphasizing friendship skills.  This year, I am trying a few new things with a Skittles icebreaker and question cards to structure the discussion a little more.  Here are a few examples of my question cards........

I also updated my welcome certificates for new students.  At the end of last year, our Leadership Club decorated the certificates and added sweet message for new students to give them a more personal feel. I loved handing them out to new students in the spring and had some left over for the beginning of this year; now I have to replenish!  I use the welcome certificates to close the group and encourage the students to hang them on their wall at home to remind them how excited we are to have them at our school now.

If you want a ready-made New Student Group Pack, check out my new addition at the Life on the Fly TPT store. It will be 20% off for the next 24 hours!
Happy Almost-Fall and Enjoy! ~ Angela

Math Matters

fallen-tree-two

Today was our big day.  We’d been putting it off for months, focusing on getting in better condition before carrying any serious weight on our weekend hikes.  But with only six months left before our thru-hike, and the temperature finally dropping, we decided it was time to take the plunge. So this morning I swapped ......

On Growing Up in the Appalachian Mountains: An Intro

mcafeeknob

One of my relatives used to say that to arrive at the Hill’s household you needed a four-wheel-drive truck, followed by an ATV, followed by a horse, then a donkey, and you have to complete the last section on foot. This was only a slight exaggeration. I was raised on a 100-acre Black Angus cow ......

Why Do Golf Courses Have 18 Holes?

Why Do Golf Courses Have 18 Holes? The short answer is that golf courses have not always had eighteen holes. And in some cases they still don’t. Originally, courses had as many holes as space allowed and the players desired. From golf’s beginnings through the 1800s, some courses had as few as five holes (Leith,... Read more »
