Why I’ve chosen to do an ultralite thru-hike

We’ll get to my reasons, but first… A bit about me.   My name is Kai, I don’t want to choose my own trail name, and have yet to be given one.  I’m currently 19 years old, my thru-hike will begin shortly after my 20th birthday, and because I am not currently enrolled in college ......

Dull to Brilliant

Our lives revolve much like the perpetual gears of a clock, always knowing exactly what is coming next, one rotation of the drive gear, rotates the extremities three times to get the same result each time. The perpetual, persistence of consistency in life gives us the ability to see what is always coming next, not allowing us to discover it ourselves, much like the presupposition of ones actions in acting causing the events to become redundant much like life itself. Everyday life and its events are not meant to be art; art is only the exploitation of life’s truth over done.

Consistency of life creates monotonous art. Without interest, without discovery, without events, our lives as humans would be incredibly boring. Going through the motions of life only having a basic goal to survive rather than flourish. If our lives were simply that, why would we want to watch something that is as cut and dry as our lives? The answer is we wouldn’t. To be blatantly honest our lives are simply that, they are that minuscule, without the specificity and beauty of art in our everyday environment and entertainment, life as we know it without art would be as important as the growth of a blade of grass. Even though to that blade of grass its growth is crucial to reach that specific point in which it has vantage over contesting species to receive the most nutrition, but in the overall out look we have more potential than that. Each own persons growth is important to them, but when that monotony is portrayed in art and film it is the corrosive material that erodes the keystone of specificity acting relies on to captivate an audience. As actors it is our job, no our privilege to get in front of an audience to inspire people to reach for the unobtainable in life, we inspire curiosity, we live the dreams of people in imaginary circumstances.  We cannot allow the consistency of life fall into the specificity of our work because then it will become meaningless, and leave only room for the perpetual and opaque sheet of death to be drawn over our eyes as artists.

Acting is an art form that incorporates the dramatic and beautiful experiences of life, and bestows them into the situations of a scene. Bestowment of the dramatic experiences happens both in the scene and in the actor, who conveys that action. Actors cannot bring the consistency of their lives into their work because that monotonous piece of everybody’s lives isn’t interesting. We are when place in a difficult, or incredible situation. Don’t live your life act it.

Interoperability: Providing flexible student support in a multi-LMS world

notes-macbook-study-conference

As any student-success team can tell you, migrating from one learning management system to another can be a real pain.  It’s expensive, time-consuming, and almost impossible to accomplish without involving everyone from IT, to instructional design, to individual faculty members.  Worse still, between rebuilding your course templates, training instructors and staff on updated workflows, and orienting students to a new online experience, third-party integrations often fall through the cracks, depriving students of the critical learning tools they need to be successful in their toughest courses.

According to a recent survey by Edutechnica, this is a growing problem.  The number of colleges and universities running multiple LMS platforms has more than doubled since 2014, with most schools doing so because of an ongoing migration project.  And while many institutions appear to be doing a better job with their migrations – setting up their new LMS platforms and retiring the old ones at a quicker pace – tens of thousands of learners remain stuck in legacy systems during the transition period, where they often don’t have access to third-party support services and course content.  These trends are likely to continue in the coming years, as more schools phase out their Pearson, ANGEL, and WebCT systems to transition to newer LMS solutions.

Fortunately, the burgeoning interoperability movement, led by organizations like the IMS Global Learning Consortium, is making it easier than ever to connect students with leading EdTech tools from any platform – or even multiple platforms, as the case may be – without using up your limited IT resources.

At Tutor.com, for example, we like to integrate our service using IMS Global’s Learning Tools Interoperability standard, or LTI.  LTI capability is included with virtually any LMS, including Blackboard Learn, Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle, Sakai, and many more, so it’s easy for administrators to create secure single sign-on links to Tutor.com from any course page, using their LMS’s built-in configuration tools.  There’s no code to write, no files to upload, and no “vendor lock-in” – just a quick, easy, and standardized setup process you can repeat across multiple LMS instances to connect students with an expert tutor, no matter where they sign in to access their courses.  Faculty members can even follow the same links to receive on-demand usage reports, or subscribe to real-time Early Alert notifications to help them stay on top of students who may need extra support from an instructor.

Does your school have an interoperability strategy?  Are you dealing with a tricky LMS migration?  Are you using IMS Global standards, or those of similar organizations like Shibboleth, to give students access to your full student-support ecosystem?  Please share your experiences in the comment section below – we’d love to hear how you’re approaching this problem!

It could have been a hot mess.....

Today was the first day of my 12th year as a counselor, and I have to say, it was one of my best!  I hate to jinx myself for the rest of the week, but I didn't have one Kindergarten crier. What?! I'm pretty sure that's never happened to me before.  It was also great being in the second year at my school; I could actually help people find things, I knew students' and parents' names, and I was able to pop into teachers' rooms without feeling like I was interrupting them because I have relationships with them now. It was amazing!

I'm hitting the ground running with my FIRST 30 DAYS CHECKLIST, which I wrote about here and here last year. Download it for free at Life on the Fly TPT, especially if you are a brand new counselor. I am also loving some of the changes I have made in my office this year.  I had a stroke of inspiration about a month ago and decided I would paint my cinder block wall with chalkboard paint.  First, because the white was really boring and ugly.  Second, because I thought the kids would think it was awesome to be able to express themselves through chalk drawing. Third, because I wanted to incorporate some of my regular group and individual counseling activities into wall activities. So, it could have been a hot mess when I started.......(and I was worried it would be).

Here's what I started with.......GROSS!

I bought 2 cans of tintable chalkboard paint from Home Depot and decided on the royal blue color because it would be dark enough to show different colors of chalk, and it's also one of our school colors.  I painted a huge rectangle on the bare wall. and added some 3-D butterflies I happened to have to extend the blue color out into the rest of the room.

Next, I added a fun pennant banner. I knew the kids wouldn't be able to reach that high anyway, and it made it feel more festive.  You know I love festive!!! I bought different cardstock papers at Michaels and used my handy dandy Cameo Silhouette machine to cut out the triangles. It is definitely one of the best investments I have ever made for my crafty projects.

Then came the fun part! I bought liquid chalk markers on Amazon to make more permanent designs that I wanted to stay up for awhile or would use all year with kids! Check out my miracle scale, positive thought mirror, and "Be Groovy" inspirational quote.

So, it could have been a hot mess, but when those first kids came in and saw this wall, their reactions said it all.....it is awesome!  I am so glad I took the risk and that it paid off.  It is going to be a great year!

If you have any questions about this project, feel free to comment or email me! I'd be happy to give you more tips on how I made it work.
Enjoy and Happy Counseling! ~ Angela

My pack is so ultralight, you can barely see it.

I suppose I'm rested up a bit and ready to start on all these writing projects I've had in mind for some time. First off is talking about my gear for the AT. I had a base weight of just under 9 lbs. I think I only met 5 other people hiking sub-10 which is what people consider "ultralight". I really liked having a low pack weight. I have a history of back problems so it really makes a big difference to me. Even if I carry more water during a day, the next morning I can get spasms or even have difficulty getting up. bae

The Gratitude. I have a policy that gratitude is where all good things begin and end. So let’s begin this beauty with some good ol’ gratitude. I’ve conquered a fair share of demons in my 23 years; the trail is not going to be one of them. The trail is a pure gift, an opportunity, ......

Chasing Happiness

I’m currently sitting in a hammock at a hostel on the precipice of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. With less than 400 miles left, it’s  hard not to think about how close we are to the end. It’s a subtle shift, but we’re all starting to talk about it: logistical plans for the 100 ...

The Trades

IMG_2443

My Pre-hike gear list, was promising, the things traded: 27 miles into my hike my Vasque Monolith Mid boots ripped. Sadly, after twisting my ankle less than 150 miles later, I switched once again to a pair Keen Targhee ......

Myron Avery: The Architect of the Appalachian Trail

canva-photo-editor (1)

“Might well, instead of ‘Appalachian Trail’, have been termed, ‘The Anonymous Trail,’ in recognition of the fact that many, many people…have labored on [it]. So what happens when you’re not gone a long, long time? What happens when injury or heartbreak forces you back home before you’re finished? Before the metamorphosis has fully taken hold and wrought the change you wanted?...

The End.

How I felt when I finished

It’s been almost a month since I have summited Katahdin and being that it is the 100th birthday of the National Parks, I figured it was time to attempt and organize my highly disordered thoughts about finishing the trail and being off trail. Shackleton on Annapurna…

Shackleton

Sometimes, when I start fussing about a trail being too steep, or the day too cold, or my feet too sore, or not having had enough food, I mutter to myself “Remember Shackleton.” ...

image

While so many thru-hikers are obsessing over minimalist strategies to lighten their loads, others are saying “fuck it, I’m bringing my guitar!” This write up is an ode to my fellow musicians carrying instruments on the AT, along with some change of plans in my own hike. Music is within everyone, whether you think your ......

“To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon the verdant green hills is the perfect refreshment”. –Jane Austen In between paragraphs outlining late 18th century society in England, Jane Austen managed to capture simply and eloquently one of the sweetest parts of trail life.
